Mad by Name
Well sited hotel just over Blackfriars Bridge on the South Bank. Excellent location for visiting so many of the cities tourist sites. The 2nd floor room was small but more than adequate, it was clean and the ensuite bathroom warm and well provided for in the way of toiletries.Reception had been effievient and speedy. The receptionist did not however provide any retails of the hotel facilities, she did though point out the wifi code on my room card as I attempted to copy the code displayed on the desk. The restaurant is situated at the back of the bar and I'd been warned not to expect too much. As one member of a group of eight it seemed that the kitchen struggled if more than three people ordered the same dish. I settled for the fish and chips and in fact it was very good. The steaks some of my colleagues had ordered did not fare as well, ok if you like your steak annilated, that seemed to be the only option no matter how you had requested it. Still with a few bottles of wine the evening went well.Breakfast the next morning was equally odd, several members of the group just settled for what they were brought, despite the fact that the waitress had gone to great lengths to check what people actually wanted, perhaps the kitchen staff couldn't read her writing!Despite all this the Mad Hatter suited my needs and I'm sure that I'm be back

Good hotel, Great location
This is a really nice hotel in a great location. The room was nice and clean, and a decent size too. The location was excellent, just a short walk from the South Bank. The pub next door had good food and some decent ales. The only slight downside was that during our stay the pub had a beer delivery (to be expected I guess considering it is a pub) very early in the morning which was extremely noisy. This aside, I would definitely recommend this hotel. In fact we are looking at another trip to London soon and will be hoping to stay here again.

Good location, great value for money, does what it says on the tin!
Around the corner from Southwark tube station or a 5 minute walk to Waterloo - great location for spending time around Southbank and a 5min tube journey to Leics Sq / Piccadilly.Situated close enough to all the hussle and bussle you could want the hotel offered a respite with it's relaxing atmosphere - nice to enjoy a pint in their leather sofas.Modest accommodation but exactly as we expected. The room was of a reasonable size, LCD tv, coffee/tea making facilities, biscuits, and toiletries.Everything was functional and everything was clean.Nice firm bed, no a/c but the room had an oscillating fan, but it was nice to be able to open the bedroom for fresh air, and not to be disturbed by any road noise.Would definitely recommend the hotel and would definitely stay again.Great value for money.

We really liked it.
Husband and I stayed here May 7-11 and again May 18-23, went to Cornwall in the middle. We have had some awful experiences with hotels in London, i.e. a 100lb per night (can't find my Great Britain Pound symbol) room where one person had to stand IN the bathroom in order for the other person to enter the room, no clearance around the US double-sized bed. This happened twice. Our room, 209, here had a desk, chair, small chest of drawers and two nightstands along with a closet space a bout 30" wide. Bathroom with the usual UK towel warmer and handheld shower over bathtub, pedestal sink with a 12"x48" shelf so you actually have someplace to put your toiletries. The room was clean, king size bed comfortable with a down comforter. There was about 6' of space on each side of the bed. Carpet looked new and was clean (same color under the nightstands as in the doorway). The window treatments throughout the hotel were decorator quality but for the sheers. The windows actually open, no a/c but a functioning, quiet oscillating fan on a stand. The bathroom vinyl flooring looked new. The bathroom was clean. We included the cooked breakfast in our room rate. England has the best bacon on the planet. It is not like US bacon, much leaner and your typical slice is about 3" wide by 5-6" long. The Continental breakfast is included with the cooked breakfast. Killer croissants, sliced cheese, sliced ham, cereals, granolas, yogurt, fruit, toast, apple juice, orange juice, grapefruit juice, coffee, tea.All staff were very nice and helpful without exception. There was even an ice machine 20 feet from our room, almost unheard of anywhere in Europe. The bar closes at 11, I think, but guests can get anything they want all night. Closest Underground station is Southwark. Next closest is Waterloo, which has trains and underground. You can go anywhere in the UK from Waterloo. About a 1/2 mile walk. Totally safe feeling neighborhood, we walked it at all hours. The hotel is one building off from the corner of Blackfriars Road (and bridge) and Stamford Street, just south of the bridge. Very easy to get a taxi. There are many restaurants in the neighborhood. The downstairs bar/restaurant is quite lovely, again newly carpeted I think, very nice Victorian sort of decor. Now, for some UK alcohol information: By law, places that serve alcohol pour either only 25ml or they pour only 35ml for all their hard liquor drinks. That goes for all hard liquor. You can order doubles, which would be 50ml or 70ml, depending on which amount the bar in question has chosen. So, a gin and tonic in a bar that has chosen 25ml is 1/2 as strong as the typical US gin and tonic. I don't remember the specifics of wine other than we frequently saw volumes etched on the wine glasses. The only negatives are that pretty much all the metal fixtures in the bathroom have been cosmetically damaged by the hard water, but they work just fine. They have VERY hot water. When we tried to turn the towel warmer off it leaked water on the floor, so we just kept it on and kept the door shut so it would not make our room too hot.We will definitely go back next time we are in London. Familiarity is a good thing - nothing much to whine about here and we now know the neighborhood.

decent hotel in a decent location
The hotel is old fashioned in structure. We had a superior room and I guess that just meant it was bigger. The room was clean and comfortable, nice reception staff, genuinely sweet. The pub connected to the Hotel was nice and if you wanted to drink for 24 hours you could as a resident.
