Great location, satisfactory rooms, arrogant doorman
I've stayed in first class hotels around the world, and while the Loews is well-located and does everything pretty well, when it comes to luggage, they have problems. First, one of the doormen is extremely unfriendly/unhelpful. Although it may not be his job to remove the baggage from the car trunk (I think the bellboys are suppposed to do this), he seemed completely put off when there was no bellboy and I opened the trunk. I guess he expected me to carry the bags! And second, I have stayed at the hotel multiple times before, and everytime I ask them to keep a bag overnight for me (when I take a short side trip out of NYC), it seems to cause all sorts of issues - no space, no luggage tag, grimaces, etc. Just take my bag, give me a ticket and smile. The hotel has generous-sized rooms and the decor is fine, but the gym in the basement could use a bit of work (but I guess that's what you get for an older hotel).

We enjoyed our stay at Loews Regency we stayed there on our return to NYC after travelling in the Mid West for a conference and then back to NYC via Montreal, Boston and Cape Cod.Loewes was a fabulous find for us as we had spent a week at the beginning of our US visit, some five weeks prior, at the Waldorf Astoria and we were not that impressed with that hotel. Loewes staff were very accomodating, the location was fantastic and local knowledge an absolute treat. We enjoyed our time on the Upper East Side and our accomodation helped us to feel totally at ease and relaxed prior to our huge trip back to NZ via LAX and home to the provinces again. Thoroughly recommend this establishment.

Will Renovation Help?
I agree with the most recent reviews--this hotel is not what it used to be. I stayed here for a week through the closing of the hotel on January 1, 2013. Our room had several problems including a clock which didn't light, and television that didn't regularly work. Our lounge chair was ripped up. On registration I was initially assigned to an entry level room. When I asked why I wasn't give a luxury king as booked, the desk clerk said that she would "upgrade" me. That was no upgrade--that was the room that I paid for. If I hadn't been aware, I would have been shortchanged! There was apparently a shortage of shampoo---never had any during my entire stay.The most attentive worker in the hotel was the head of housekeeping--she remained a breath of fresh air. The rest of the employees were just going through the motions. Perhaps, they were bitter that they were going to be laid off during the planned renovations. I hope to see this facility returned to its former glory when it re-opens later this year.

Needs renovation
Stayed at the Loews Regency Hotel for a three day family reunion. Staff are very pleasant and responsive. Calls were returned quickly and, when problems emerged with the room, the response was prompt. Hotel is conveniently located on the upper east side. Hotel service prices (e.g. parking, breakfast) were very expensive, even for NYC. Consider parking elsewhere and go out for breakfast. We had to change rooms as the drain backed up in the bathroom causing a substantial silt deposit into the bathtub. Renovations are needed.

Providing great service right up to the (temporary) end
The hotel is closing for major renovations as of the beginning of January 2013. In the 1980's and before that time it was considered one of the finest hotels in NYC. Major corporations housed their boards of directors in their plush rooms. Their breakfast room was the scene of the original 'Power Breakfast" for top execs, lawyers, investment bankers and politicians.The hotel rooms became tired and renovations are sorely needed. Still the rooms were scrupulously clean and the service remained that of a world class big city hotel. Hopefully the staff and management, many of whom have been with the hotel for a long time, will return when the renovation is complete.
