A Peaceful Oasis
We found Hotel Vondel to be a peaceful spot to come home to at the end of our busy, hectic days exploring central Amsterdam and its crowded streets. The location is perfect, on a beautiful quiet street, with easy access via trams to anywhere in the city and walking distance to the museums and great restaurants. The patio area is a beautiful, peaceful outdoor space and was never crowded. The staff was helpful and attentive and the restaurant menu choices, though not abundant, were varied enough. We were given a very nice room on the first floor overlooking the street. We preferred to have one on a higher floor overlooking the patio area. As none was available at the time, we were accommodated the next day, our luggage was moved, and there was a bottle of wine and a note from the management apologizing for our inconvenience--nice touch.

Avoid room 106. Don't expect 4 star experience
OK, so my uncle lived in Amsterdam for years and this was one of 4 hotels he recommended. oh dear. First off i'd like to say that despite it just not being that great, the manager was amazing, which is why i've rated the customer service above what i might have done had he not been about.so this holiday was with my mum and she paid for it because it was my birthday. my mum is well-travelled and has stayed in hotels all over the world. i'm just going to talk you through the experience from start to finish. When you look at the website the rooms look amazing, they talk about Burberry blankets, chandeliers, fluffy robes...the reality is that this is just a few of the rooms. my mum paid around ¿¿250 per night (inc tax) for a large double room and that was without breakfast. we'd been travelling since 7am and arrived at 3.15pm, checked in, went to our room and were met by housekeeping telling us the room wasn't clean. we came downstairs, explained to the receptionist who apologised, gave us a ticket and said to go and have a complimentary drink in the bar whilst we waited. i ordered 2 single G&T, handed the ticket to the barstaff who said they didnt need it. then we were presented with a bill. i explained the drinks were complimentary, she went away and came back with another bill and told me only the tonic was on the house, we had to pay for the gin!! after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing and confusion we were finally told we now wouldnt have to pay for the gin.arrived in room c. 4pm. room 106. if this is a large double then you'd be best off not booking a standard double if you;re more than 1 person. it was tiny. as was the bathroom.little touches i would have expected such as bottled water in the room, fresh (or at the least, UHT milk), maybe some fruit, none were available, no robes in the room, no-one offered to show us to our room or take our luggage up for us, the garden was overgrown and half dead - not well looked after and not somewhere you'd want to relax with a book / drink etc, the seat covers in the lobby are filthy - you can see where everyone's dirty hair has been rubbing on the head rest and the arm rests were equally dirty, thick layer of dust on the lobby windowsills. basically you're paying 5 star prices for 3 star serviceWe freshened up and went out to explore and made a conscious decision to come back early, get an early night so we could make the most of the rest of our weekend. We had dinner and arrived back at the hotel at around 10.45pm. we were still being kept awake at 1.30am - unbeknownst to us, our room was directly under the restaurant. there were people smoking and chatting in the garden directly outside our window, we heard heavy footsteps going up and down the metal steps at the side of our room and footsteps and chairs moving about above us. finally got to sleep at 3am only to be woken up AGAIN at 6am with them setting up service for breakfast. my mum was nearly in tears she was so tired. We went down to ask to speak to the manager and to give him all credit, he was brilliant. calm, professional, listened and took everything on board, apologised and took action. we were moved into another room that night, which was a 2 roomed suite but it was just the inconvenience of it all - having to pack our stuff up again, unpack again at the other end, we were tired and snappy and had to come back to our room at 5pm to sleep so we had the energy to go out that night, and even then we were back by 11pm as too tired to enjoy our night. frustrating, annoying and basically our weekend was ruined.the manager agreed to refund us the first night's stay. we are hoping the website we booked the room on will refund my mum's card.we would not be staying here again and this is a real shame because actually, there's a lot going for the hotel - it just needs things to be tightened up and for it to be marketed realistically. and seriously, get rid of room 106!! - make it into a living room for guests to use, something, but d

Weekend in Amsterdam
We got some inexpensive flight from KLM to Amsterdam. It was only after we had the flights that we realised this was Queens weekend in Amsterdam with the abdication and all the City was pretty full. Our first choice of hotel was not confirmed so we went for the Vondel and must have got the last room.we were allowed to check in a couple of hours early, 13:00 instead of the usual 15:00. we were given room 106 and it took a while to realise the room was down one floor. I then remembered the review of the room about the noise from 6:30 as you are under the kitchen and dining area. well they were right so if you are a light sleeper or la late riser this is not the room for you. We are neither and it was only a three night stay. On the plus side it is a large room with a nice bathroom with full bath tub. You also look out over the garden terrace. The dining area is light and airy and never overcrowded even with a full hotel. There is a good selection of food and quality is also very good. The staff who serve the coffee were very attentive and friendly. The reception staff were the same.Cleanliness of the hotel is to a very high standard. And what a location. Two minutes walk from Leidersplein and the trams. In fact if you are going to Centraal Station on your departure the number 1 tram stop is just one minute away. You are also close to Vondelpark a lovely place if you are there on a warm summer day.So a good quality hotel with the only drawback being if you are given a first floor room and like a lie in you may be disappointed.

Good hotel, but perhaps avoid room 105
Stayed for one night and the hotel is very nice and the staff were great. Its in a great location in a very nice neighborhood. The only problem was that I was allocated room 105 which is in the basement and the small windows are the ones you see at the front entrance at street level so all you see are the shoes of people walking by. This in itself is not really a problem, however the real issue is in the morning when people are unchaining their bikes etc and the noise is really loud together with peoples voices as they walk past! I think the hotel should only let this particular room if the rest of the hotel is full and they mention its position to guests. In my case the hotel was not full and they obviously feel it is acceptable to provide this particular room, which is a shame as the rest of their hotel and service is great.
