More than I expected
I had read a lot of reviews arounf the amsterdam american, hotel and how it was outdated, small noisy rooms and stuffy staff etc, this was not my reality, I was given a a decent sized room, the staff were proffessional, efficient without being rigid. This hotel has wasnt built yesterday, however that for me is part of the charm, and it is not falling apart, I have stayed in many hotels around the world, and this is a fully serviced four star hotel. the concierge where always willing to give advice, and offered to hold are bags, until a later flight. Breakfast was decent mainly cotinental, with some cooked food. Ther are transport links to everywhere right outside, and in my opinion the hotel is located on the best square in the city.I would have no hesitation in booking for another trip to the city, and it was made all the better by Chelsea winning :~)

Dissapointed
I booked a 3 night break in this hotel.The hotel itself is ok and the staff were nice.Problem is it's under renovation at the moment.The view from our first room was of scaffolding and our second room had a great view but was right beside where the work was taking place. The work started at 8am each morning.Also the Sunday we arrived was the last day of the Dutch football season.Right outside our hotel is where the hooligans that are barred from the stadium gather.So leaving the hotel we were immediately confronted by police officers, vans,horses etc.We were not advised of this when booking otherwise I would have gone to another part of the city.

Good but average (Mind I only have a short experience - 1 night)
Since I only stayed for one night because on business, I did merely experience a short part of the hotel. But my room (no. 312) was not impressive, and not nearly as neat and modern as the home page shows. Still good or ok... I think I got one of the old rooms, with paint flaking, and some wear and tear.I stayed over on a Tuesday and there was action outside my window the whole night, so I could not have it open. A bummer since I do not like ari con, which the room has.The beds are good and hard, likewise with the pillow - good comfort.

Strange decor
Stayed over Christmas 2012. Location was great but the room was just odd. Black walls, fake white leather furniture, and a larger than life sized picture of a bikini clad close up woman on the wall. Very strange, not relaxing or inviting. Couch you could only sit on unless you were under 4 feet tall. Accommodated our very early arrival and checked us in before check in time which was great, I probably would of asked for another room if I hadn't been so tired.

Value for money?
Superb location, very nice service at reception desk, Art Deco Restaurant, lively bar. But: we payed more than enough in holiday period for a deluxe room that was too small, the room of one of us was not yet cleaned at 5 PM for two consecutive days, no warm water at first night (well solved the next day). We had a good time in Amsterdam, but the Americain Hotel should do a lot better for the money they ask
