Can't be bothered
We chose this hotel because of a good deal from Travelzoo. First impression was of a tired hotel, needing some work but this didn't put us off. What did was the attitude of reception staff who were not welcoming at all. One's first point of contact with any hotel is Reception and this sets the tone of the place and here they were not friendly at all, I don't think I saw a smile at any time. We found our room, not too bad for the price we'd paid. It was clean and tidy BUT overlooking roofs and very tatty building opposite. Also the noisiest machine (generator, air con??) I've ever heard! To close the window we had to climb on a chair because the pull cords were broken and even then it was still noisy. The bathroom had been refitted but the ceiling was unfinished, still bare plaster. Copious hot water but unfortunately most of it escaped from the back of the shower head so was wasted. Towels very small. Dining room was OK but service left a lot to be desired. Menu was reasonably good and the food acceptable. However we gave up waiting for coffee and left. On the plus side, breakfast was excellent, self service so no sitting around waiting. Hot plates, hot food and plenty of it! It surprised me that this hotel had no secure area for bags to be left. We were very disappointed with the hotel, although the location is great it doesn't make up for the 'couldn't care less' attitude of the staff at reception. I certainly couldn't recommend the Royal to anyone and we will not be returning.

Poor service at dinner
Me and my children stayed here for one night, our room was large and mostly clean although the bathroom taps etc could have done with a really good scrub. Breakfast was fabulous however the service at dinner was terrible. Only two staff on to serve , show people to their table etc we waited nearly an hour for our plates to be cleared and in this time no one acknowledged us at all. I told the man on reception in the morning when we checked out how disappointed we were but he wasnt very interested. If you do stay here just avoid staying for dinner, the rest of the stay was very nice.

Great stay i will be returning
Due to working in the area I chose this hotel as it was great value for money and I'm looking for a great place to stay for the time I'm here. Living in the city you don't see such great views like this hotel has. Yes the hotel is clearly old and needs TLC but its when speaking to the manager he explained that is what will be happening in the upcoming year. For the rest my room was clean and had great character, I like that the decoration fits with the hotel. Breakfast was a plenty with enough selection and tasted fab. I didn't take up the option for dinner so can't comment. The bar lounge was very relaxed with friendly bar staff. On that note I will say all the staff I encountered were pleasant and friendly. The hotel offers a lot for the money you pay. Great value for money and i will use the hotel again on my next visit. See you in two weeks

Terrible service, food, dirty, just awful
We had stayed in this hotel once before and had a great time so my husband brought us back there for the bank holiday weekend as a special treat. The receptionist was very rude, unhelpful and spoke to us at first from the back office and not at the front at the reception desk. They did not mention that you had to pay extra for the swimming pool and we were then told by a very rude pool attendent that we had to pay ¿¿2.50 per adult and ¿¿1 per child. This was one of the reasons we booked the hotel was the pool. The pool was dirty, plaster coming off the walls, jucczi was out of order and the changing room, old and dirty. My husband booked a suite, which was fine, except there was dirty ear cleaners and a bag of rubbish in the bathroom. We didnt eat in the hotel, just had the breakfast and the chef nor the breakfast staff seemed to be able to cope with the numbers, and it didnt seem that busy. We had to wait 10 minutes for any hot food and even then they brought out a small bowl of sausages, which were soon gone and a bowl of uncooked black pudding. The food service area was dirty as were the plates and bowls. On informing the staff on anything in the hotel, they didnt seem bothered. the only one saving grace was the lovely bar tender, I didnt catch her name but wish I had as she was great. The hotel workers are lacking in pride for their job and hotel. it is a shame cause this hotel could be great and it looks nothing like the photos on their website.

lovely view, shame about the mucky windows!
Stayed here last Saturday and had a nice time. We were in the Sitwell suite which was surprisingly spacious with a big bath and ambient lighting. The bed was comfortable and big enough for 2 adults and a five year old who doesn't want to sleep alone in the spare bed. Lovely views of the sea which was only ruined by the dirty windows. A little bit noisy at night as you can hear everything happening outside (not sure if windows are double glazed?). They have a pool and sauna downstairs which was a nice addition although not impressive. The pool is small and the ladies changing room is smelly! Breakfast was nice, buffet style with good selection of cold and hot food although, had to queue and wait at the door for twenty minutes whilst they get our table ready -again, not impressed! Parking - had to park at the nearby 24 hours NCP, about 5 minutes away, not bad considering it's in the centre of Scarborough.
