A real find
As a former resident of the Upper West Side I had tried to get into this hotel before, but it was always full. This time Air Canada booked us a room and it exceeded expectations. Clean room, excellent service, elegant touches of old New York, especially in the breakfast room, where the food was also excellent. And of course the location was perfect for me. If they'd had a coffee maker in the room I'd have given them a five on everything. However, that's nothing a cup warmer can't see to.

Clean, quiet hotel, near Central Park and Subway.
It was disappointing to be given paper plates and plastic cutlery in the breakfast room because a large party of school children were staying at the hotel. Guests not part of the school party should have been given proper crockery and metal cutlery. This is not what one expects from a good hotel.Also, staff would not replenish the hot water urn when it ran out, when asked.

Terrible - worse experience ever
I have never before had the misfortune to stay in a hotel quite as bad as this one - the staff were incredibly rude - from the concierge to the receptionist - just really bad, when you needed assistance they would glare at you as though you were being painful, the room was so tiny and it had 2 single little beds in it - Im 6 ft tall so this really didnt gel well - when we asked if we could get our room upgraded we were told that it was not possible as it would cost too much - without even giving us a figure - we had been staying on the West Coast at the Loews, the Cosmopolitan and the Handlery hotels and they were absolutely beautiful, staff were helpful and friendly and the rooms were good - then we arrive here to start a Cosmos tour and were treated terribly. We complained to the tour director and he shrugged off our complaints saying it was the first time they used this hotel and this was one of the better hotels - will never do a tour with them again due to this hotel and the Cosmos response. I spoke to a few other people on the tour and they agreed that the service was shocking... NEVER AGAIN - and I will lett everyone I know that travels to avoid that hotel like the plague!

Excelsior Hotel, NYC
Great location, walking distance to Museum of Natural History and Central Park, restaurants, cafes. The Hotel itself was extremely over-heated. Room service was excellent however, the size of the room was very small and poky. I paid for a queen size room and was given a twin size room that was very cramp.Reception would not pass on phone messages to room when absent - very unco-operative - grossly inefficient.I would not recommend this hotel as it is certainly not value for money. The staff were not friendly or willing to oblige.

Great Stay and Location
I had a great 1 night stay at the Excelsior. I must have passed this hotel numerous times but this was the first time I stayed here. I spent about $150 for this room--what a bargain for a great location--also subway is right there. Museum of Natural History right across and Central Park.. makes this a excellent location plus all the restaurants around the neighborhood. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It was very clean and so comfortable. The staff were really nice--they even upgraded us to a suite--which was extra nice because we did not even ask.
