Not great...
My boyfriend and I stayed at the Far East Hotel in Beijing for two nights as part of an organized tour. Unfortunately, we were rather disappointed with our experience there. On our first morning there, we woke up quite early only to find that there was no hot water with which to shower! On our second night there, we asked the front desk if they could call a cab for us, and the response from the front desk attendant was that cabs don't like going there. We were there in early April, and the temperature in Beijing was getting down to zero degrees at night. When my boyfriend called the front desk to ask if they could turn up the heat (it was freezing!), they said that they only have heat in the winter!The downstairs cafe is ok. The staff were quite helpful there and they serve some Western food options.All in all, I wouldn't stay at the Far East Hotel unless you're a really experienced traveler and are ok with something REALLY basic.

This hotel is situated in a hutong area in Beijing. It is within walking distance (15 min) of Tian'anmen Square, Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven Park.The rooms are relatively large but the decor needs some redecoration - staff is friendly.I would definitely stay there again.

loud guests and rude staff. very local
Not the nicest place with stains everywhere (the shower curtain was yellow on the bottom). All I can say is that this place has a very local feel-in the hutong... might be hard to find for taxi drivers who are not familiar with the area. There are many local restaurants around and it's a 15 minute walk to Line 2's Hepingmen station. The air conditioning was pretty horrible--hotter with the AC on for some reason. Staff are not helpful at all and wifi does not work at all in the room. Spend more and stay somewhere nicer

Don't go!
This was a terrible hostel, we choose it despite the bad reviews because our friends book it so we wanted to stay with them. Disaster. The spartan rooms in the hostel part are terrible, humidity stains everywhere, back-killer matresses, bad smell, and the toilets I can not even start.The hostel and the hotel are facing each other on each side of a narrow street. The yard part were the hostel is is absolutely patetic, even for Chinese hostel standards. The hotel part is better, but the staff is awful, rude and unhelpful. Wifi doesn't work at all, they tell you you have to change the IP address and so on, when you ask them to help you with that task, they don't reply to you and just continue doing other things, they can not even speak english.The only good thing about this place is that they give you back your money if you check out before (which off course we did the very next day), even if you pay with credit card.

Not the best choice
We have been to this hostel/hotel many times over the years. In 2010, it was good. We were shocked when we returned in July 2012 to see how it had changed - for the worse. The front desk staff were rude and didn't care about any complaints that the guests put forth. There was suppose to be Wifi in the lobby - not. The internet they promise in the room is non-existent. Therefore, trying to do anything on the computer was hit and miss.The restaurant that had been there is now a linen storage room. The lounge downstairs used to be available for just relaxing and watching DVD's, but now you must buy a drink in order to stay.In the past, if you check out and left you luggage until you left for the train station or wherever, it was free. No longer! It is 10 yuan per bag.This hostel/hotel was a good place in the past for foreigners, however over the years fewer and fewer foreigners are staying here. We were informed from a local vendor whom we have known for years that Far East is "no good anymore".Our next visit to Beijing will have us staying somewhere else!
