Too authentic for me
This "hotel" is situated in a secondary hutong, which is a rather small and dusty alley. Some call it the old town. Some call it slums. One thing is true: this place is as authentic as they come. Normally, stay away from big name hotels in favor of family owned small inns, which is what I did this time in Beijing. Having stayed there for 5 nights, I cannot really think about any redeeming feature of this place. It seems that it is owned and run by a single family. And you get to meet pretty much all of them any time you go in and out. If you stumble in around 6 pm, all 7 or 8 of them are sitting at the dinner table enjoying their evening meal and some of them would give you a stink eye as you walk by in order to get to your room in the inner courtyard. That's pretty awkward. Some of them are nice, especially the young lady who speaks some English. Two of the younger guys were not particularly friendly, except on the evening when I checked in. Then they were pretty intoxicated and treated me to a bottle of Tsingtao while they were eating sunflower seeds and spitting out husks onto the city map. The room doesn't get cleaned at all except getting new towels and having the blanked folded on the bed. So all the dirt and sand that accumulated on your shoes after walking through all the hutongs will just stay on the floor. And speaking of towels, they come decorated with ornamental holes at random locations and colored in a fancy shade of light gray caused by very old age. The sign on the bathroom wall says that you shouldn't take a shower longer than 15 minutes due to a limited heater capacity. In my experience, it was more like 5 minutes. On top of that, there's no shower enclosure, just a drain in the floor. A very, very, very slow drain. So in the 5 minutes that you can spend in the shower, the water gets up to your ankles. Which makes the entire bathroom unusable for a long time. And unless you brought with you a pair of rubber boots, you might as well forget about using the toilet until a few hours later. The only redeeming feature of this "hotel" is its proximity to an awesome restaurant called Hangzhou Stuffed Bun House on the corner of Baochao hutong and Huafeng hutong. There's no English menu and there are just 5 small tables. But for 10 RMB you can have a steamer basket with ten meat-filled buns and a bowl of egg drop soup with seaweed, cilantro, and a bunch of tiny shrimp. That was super delicious and worth enduring the unpleasant environment of Citycourt hotel.

Fun for the adventurous
We really enjoyed the experience here, not only at the hotel but deep in the Baochao Hutong neighborhood, where people and pets were friendly and some really good tiny restaurants are nearby. Staff is excellent, rooms perfectly adequate and clean. Getting to the subway requires a walk through lanes that are quite dark at night, but perfectly safe. High-speed internet, tours and other services available. Some might be turned off by the walking involved (watch out for those almost-silent electric 2-and-3-wheeled vehicles behind you!). Try getting outside about 7:30 in the morning when everyone is taking a kid to school on every kind of vehicle possible. Try the tiny steamed bun restaurant on the SW corner, one block west, one block south, for breakfast. No English, just sit down where they tell you (with strangers sometimes) and point to someone's breakfast. Check out the hourly drum show on the half hour at the drum tower starting at 9:30, just a few blocks away. A number of buses just outside the hutong's south entrance will take you to the Forbidden City in a few short stops. Be sure to have lunch or dinner at Mr. Shi's Dumplings with an ice-cold Yanjing Fresh beer. One block west, 1 1/2 blocks south of hotel, on the left, you can't miss it. Mongolian grill-at-the-table next door is good too, and if you appear as clueless as we did, they'll help you. A great experience!

Small cozy hotel with a traditional touch
A friend and I stayed here for our first four days in Beijing. Friendly staff, clean and homey. It has that 'local' edge of being in the middle of the Hutong. Staff had great knowledge of places to go, and spoke quite good English. Just make sure that you get a room that is not on the front part of the hotel (which is directly located behind a public toilet).

Friendly and convenient
Found the staff very friendly with good English. Helped us with onward travel as well as local sight seeing. Very close to Guloudajie station on the No 2 subway line, 10 min walk. Rooms quaint and clean and serviced daily. Plumbing dodgy as in all Hutongs. They really do have high speed internet available to use.Lovely relaxing courtyards to sit and chat to fellow travellers. Everyone must try the little authentic Chinese restaurant in Baochao Hutong almost opposite Mr Shis Dumplings. Ask for Alice, who speaks English, and will help translate the menu (which has pictures). We ate like kings there for 28RMB each.
