Bora Bora Not the Best
Well this was my last stop of 5 islands and I am glad it was the last to say the least. The airport is on an island by itself...very interesting. You are to take a boat across to the city...it is free and fast. You have to get your luggage and take it to the area. Make sure you get instructions on this...other hotels have their own boats. I believe Bora Bora is hyped up because of what people see in the water(which is no difference than the other water at the other islands...all the same) If you only go to Bora Bora you would not know the rest. Yes it was very nice but the city and surrounding areas of the pacific was really not the cleanest...the dirtiest to say the least. As we rode from the airport...I could tell it immediately the difference in the trash in the people's yards, junk, land unkept, the property, etc. You look on your right and the water was beautiful....look on your left and you thought it had to be a mistake...could not be that different in the same place. The Maitai was the same name and company as the Mai Tai in Huahine...but trust me a big difference in the accommodations. Maybe because Bora Bora has been used so much and the wear is showing....time for an upgrade. The layout was very nice and there were a lot of accommodations from a room to a bungalow. I read a review on one of the sites about what room not to take....so I had mentioned this to the travel agent. There were 3 numbers NOT to get....the agent told me he sent a note to the hotel about my request. Well would you know it...we got there and one of those rooms is what I was assigned to. I said to the young lady that this was not to be...I did not know what was wrong with the room per se...but I trust the reviews before I trust the hotel. She told me that there was not another room available and that she would show it to me. Well, as I continued to express my concerns ...she said "I did have a cancellation in a bungalow..but you would have to pay the difference....No to this. We continued to talk back and forth and she was nice enough to give me the bungalow for the same price. Thank you Matilda for your concerns and listening to the customer!! One of those rooms were #31 and 2 others cannot remember...the DN get rooms. The location was perfect....it was not one suspended off the water (which I did not want)..but it was about 15 feet from the sand of the beach which was encircling the hotel...actually...a lagoon and beach. It was a perfect location and if I knew I would have been guaranteed to have this one without the suspending one on the water...I would have booked it. It was #1...perfect.We got inside the room.....it was nicely laid out...but you could see the dust on the ledges. The linen was clean...but oh no. I sat on the bed...and nearly got swallowed up. It was a king bed and since I was not sharing it with my room mate who had a twin across the room....we stripped the bed of it's linens, mattress pad...."mattress was gross". I am a nurse, and even I could have choked/gagged,etc. We continued to flip and flip until I could find a solid part and semi clean part. I was wondering if I was going to be smelling something that night from the mattress...that would have done it.....I would have had to complain. I remade the bed...sat on it and much better. That night no odor from the mattress. So this was just not what I paid money for.Yes....these islands are expensive and this place was no exception to the rule. It takes money to journey to these island and the last thing you want to see is a filthy mattress...but I guess most of you don't notice these things....sorry for busting your bubble. Reality must be dealt with.Aside from this experience...like I said the dust was not good....so I cleaned this too. Bathroom nice and much space...decorations really nice. Like I said it is an older place and time for updating and firmness with the maids...it would be okay. I don't think I would stay there again....would rathe

Honeymoon Dream!
My wife and I had a great time! Simply incredible, it's paradise. We chose Hotel MaiTai because we wanted to be in overwater bungalow but couldn't afford the "fancier" hotels. The room was amazing, the staff was friendly, the food was great, and the entire experience was everything I wanted and more. It was very tough to leave.

Stay in the overwater bungalow!
My boyfriend and I couldn't believe it. We were in BORA BORA!!! If we had a bit more funding, we would have upgraded our hotel to somewhere like the intercontinental but since we booked with a travel agency, we had no choice. We were picked up from the airport without a problem. Greeted with a flower lei and juice mocktail. We were taken to our overwater bungalow (which we were lucky to get) and when we opened the door we fell in love. It really is like the pictures! Small little table that had a opening to see the water underneath. A balcony where you can just jump off straight into the ocean. It was like a dream! Throughout our stay, we also stayed in the regular rooms(garden view) too which was not too pleasant. We didn't feel it was as clean as the overwater bungalow and the AC smelled a bit musty.Staff wise, they do understand English and we had no problem communicating with them. Location wise-it's pretty close to everything with it's own private beach and free access to water activities. There is a crepe and pizza place nearby as well as a small little market. Don't bother watching TV since channels are limited. And free breakfast is not that great but you can't really complain because it's free. If we ever get the chance to come back, we would just stay in the over water bungalow.

No frills but comfortable.
Upon arriving at the Bora Bora airport, we were excited to see the many hotels had a booth with a greeter waiting with their leis and clip boards to welcome their guest; we started to look for our booth/greater and became quickly disappointed. We had to ask the representative from the Hilton to assist us. She pointed to the big boat and said Le Maitai does not have greeter and we will need to board and a car will be waiting on the other island. As we started walking our luggage to the boat, 2 gentlemen approached us and to take our luggage, we were hesitant and after a brief conversation they were taking our luggage to the boat for us. Again upon arrival to the island, again no greeter! We saw a minivan waiting and we walked up to car and ask if he could provide info on how to get to the Le Maitai hotel. His response was yes this is the car. After a 15 minute drive we arrived to the hotel and were finally greeted with a lei and a friendly smiling welcome and some concentrated juice. She then advised us that our bungalow was not yet ready and we would have to wait 10-15 minutes. We stayed a week (5 days) in an OW bungalow #5. The overall look of the room was good, we felt comfortable and safe. The bathroom door was closed and when we opened it, it reeked of urine. We decided to leave the door open to air it out and assumed it smelled due to the poor sewage system on the island and the non-flow of air when the key is not in its slot. In our option we had the best bungalow with no obstructed view; we went to sleep and woke up with the view of the ocean and sun. Our trip included breakfast and ¿¿ board dinner. Breakfast was decent, although we would have loved a change in options, eating croissants, Danishes, fruit and sausages for 5 days can get little monists. Dinner on the other hand was terrible, it lacked flavor!! Meaning none at all. We tried 2 different dishes before we concluded that we would be eating French fries for dinner for the remainder of our stay and visiting the neighborhood market down the street. The excursions were great, but the hotel staff was not very enthusiastic about booking. They had a much laid back approach to life. During our travel to the ¿¿¿shopping area¿¿¿ we found a great little restaurant called the Lucky house. The food was flavorful, hot and delicious and the staff was very friendly and remembered us each time we returned. Overall, the Le Maitai needs some major changes before we would consider returning.-hire culinary chefs not prep cook -have a greeter at the airport-Use fresh ingredients when cooking-Change the breakfast selection -Provide some sort of night life ¿¿¿Tahitian show

Comfortable, but nothing special
We stayed in an Ocean View room for a week on a trip through French Polynesia. We had planned to go to Maupiti, but did not learn of changes in the Maupiti Express schedule until too late. So my opinion of the Maitai might colored because we got a little bored. Our room was clean and comfortable, and it had a great view. The staff was friendly and the ladies that the bar were great, but the manager was a little cold. The snorkel gear was old and leaky. If you have your own mask and snorkel, bring it. Overall, the Maitai was okay, but I don't think I would stay there again. The OW bungalows at the Maitai are quite a bit less expensive than OW bungalows at other places, but they seem very close to the beach, and I don't think they offer the privacy that OW bungalows that you might get at other places. We stayed in an OW bungalow at the Sofitel in Moorea that was much further out and offered more privacy. When I booked the room, we took advantage of a "stay 6, pay for 5" deal. When I checked out, I was billed for all 7 nights that we stayed. The lady at the front went to get the manager (Heilani) with who I had corresponded about our reservation. She had confirmed in an e-mail that with the "stay 6, pay for 5" deal, we get one night free, and that the offer included breakfast, but not half board. She did not believe me when I told her that she confirmed in an e-mail that we would get one free night. So I showed her the e-mail. She seemed suspicious, and went into the office for a while. When she came out, she said that I could get the free night, but that I would need to pay for half board. We knew we did not have half board, so we did not eat dinner at their restaurant. She did not seem to believe me, and went back to the office again. When she returned, she did correct the bill. She was not friendly or apologetic about it at all. She seemed put out that she had to correct the bill.
