Not what we expected :(
We had expected a similar experience to the Hobart Grand Chanc. Unfortunately the reception was unenthusiastic, the bar had a handful of basic cocktails of which half were not available due to missing ingredients like olives - which surely the restaurant's kitchen would've had. The dinner menu lost all its appeal compared to the great eateries nearby. Parking was $6 in an open car park. Room was very cool and no thermostat that we could find. Fridge noisy in room, mattress worn out. Decor, room size and overall look was fine but the $6.50 bottle of mineral water next to the bed made us laugh. I know there are newly renovated rooms in this hotel (an additional $30), but to me it is not renovation that is needed, just replacing fridge, bedding, mattress,... Anyways, we didn't pay that much for our stay, we just expected much more!

Not impressed this time
We visitied the HGC Launceston again after enjoying it before. We actually booked for 3 nights on 2 seperate occassions in 1 week. This time we were a little dissapointed. I booked a Superior room and there wasnt much difference to the room I stayed in last time except the price. There is supposed to be better bed linen and a rain shower but I didnt find these to be worth the extra dollars. We had a view over the carpark (not very superior) and when I double checked that it was actually the superior room the receptionist said that I had a free upgrade( which I did not) so I should be just happy with what I got. As I mentioned I visited here twice in 1 week and was given almost the same room with the not so lovely view both times. On the first visit there was no soap or shampoos and there was hair on the white tiled floor. The location is fantastic. The little arcade with restaurants at the back is also great. I think the hotel lobby could do with an upgrade. Would probably stay here again but only for the location.

Grand exterior but...
So outdated, in bad need of refurbishment. The old fountain sits right smack in the middle and its not working at all. The lifts were dirty looking but the rooms were not so bad except for the beddings and furnitures. The one big plus is the huge parking and the restaurants at the back. The surrounding area is dead at night except for a simple bar a hundred meters away. For the price we paid for 4 adults, it was good value nevertheless.

Great Location
We stayed here only 1 night but found the hotel's location very central. When we checked in we were first shown to a non refurbished room and were very disappointed, the room look dated and the decor was shabby. However when we explained at the front desk that our stay was for a special occasion, my friend's 40th birthday, the staff were very helpful and moved us to a fully refurbished room which was beautifully decorated. The beds were extremely comfortable.

We loved the space in both bedroom and bathroom
Other revues of Hotel Grand Chancellor Launceston have been mixed, so we were unsure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised, and would choose to stay at the hotel again. The room we were allocated was really nice. We had requested a twin. (One of us snores and I like to be as far away as possible!) There were two queen sized beds, and still plenty of space for a pair of easy chairs, coffee table and desk arrangement in the bedroom The bathroom was a delight - a long granite bench with oversized basin. Plenty of room for toiletries and makeup! The bath had an overhead shower, but was easy to climb in and out of. Tiles were white and spotless. I did wonder why an exhaust fan had not been fitted, to minimise the build up of steam. Too difficult, in the refurbishment, perhaps. Our only gripe was lack of decent lighting in the bedroom. (The bathroom was fine.) If you wanted to read, you had no option other than to lie on the bed with your book tilted toward the small light attached to the bedhead. OK for a book, but no good for a newspaper. Our package did not include breakfast. We paid $20 per person to eat the buffet, which was comprehensive and enjoyable. The location of the hotel is excellent. We did not have a car, and found walking to the major tourist attractions easy. On Sunday mornings a farmers' market is held just across the street, too. We were flying back that day, so only bought some biscuits and jams for the family, but the snack foods available looked delicious. We also enjoyed the ambiance of the bar, and the fountain in the lobby - which was working some of the time!
