Angel Hotel
We very carefully selected our Hotels for the Sleep Tight section in our book. The reason for this is quite simple, you! That¿¿¿s right you¿¿¿re the very reason we make sure our accommodation providers are all Visit Wales accredited and then some. That leads me very quickly onto The Angel Hotel, Cardiff. The night I arrived was a very wet one and needless to say I was drenched to the skin after a long ride from Carmarthen to Cardiff on my motorbike, which for those that don¿¿¿t know, was about a 2 hour journey, taking all A roads. I was greeted warmly and genuinely by the reception staff and restaurant supervisor and asked promptly if they could get me a coffee, needless to say I did not refuse and after some time getting warm, I was checked into my room and had one of the best night¿¿¿s sleeps, I have had in a long while.This hotel is not only reasonably priced, but alongside its facilities and prime location, it all goes to make this an excellent choice during a visit to the capital. Although I am aware this doesn¿¿¿t happen all the time, I was upgraded to a suite, which has to be said was very impressive, not to mention very large. Many of the rooms here at the Angel hotel have views of the Castle opposite and the hotel itself is situated very close to everything Cardiff has to offer.Joshua Stevenson (Top 100 Attractions)

Great Location
Stayed at The Angel for 1 night. The hotel looks very grand from the outside and the reception is fab, looks really impressive as you walk in. It's a lovely old building I loved it. I would imagine that some of the rooms would be quite dated but my room ( 221 ) was lovely, it overlooked the castle. Loved the location as it was not city centre yet only 5-10min walk to everything. All staff was lovely especially the young man on reception. Did not use restaurant so cannot comment on food. 1 of the most comfiest beds I have slept in. All in all a lovely stay. Thankyou everyone.

Great location
The location of this hotel can not be beaten plus it has it's own car park which is always very useful. The entrance hall is very grand and the reception staff were friendly and welcoming. The rooms however are rather dated and the d¿¿cor is dark and not very imaginative, plus the bed was not made up very well with the valance tucked under the mattress and the throw being rather crumpled which spoilt the initial impression. However the bed was comfortable and the room was not too hot at night unlike lots of hotels. The breakfast selection was fairly standard and the cooked breakfast was not particularly good; chewy hash browns and stewed mushrooms but having said that the breakfast staff were very friendly and the restaurant is pleasant with a view out onto the castle walls. Overall I would recommend the hotel for the location and friendly and helpful staff but not for the bedroom d¿¿cor or food although having said that I would consider staying here again due to the pluses out weighing the negatives.

Character hotel in Cardiff
This is not a modern hotel - instead it's a hotel with character. Yes, the room carpet was a bit worn in places but it was clean. The furniture may have been a bit dated but was functional and fine - the bed was comfortable and presumably the newest piece of furniture in the room. Reception staff were extremely helpful - we had a small problem with the initial room we were given (it had an extra bed!) but within five minutes of one call to Reception it was sorted and we were given the choice to move rooms or have the bed removed - excellent customer service. The entrance hall and staircase were stunning. We had dinner in the restaurant on one evening and for the price (¿¿19 for 2 courses; ¿¿24 for 3) the food was excellent as was the service. The location was very convenient for shops / sights / buses. Would have no hesitation in staying again when in Cardiff. Tip for parking: the hotel car park is small. We arrived when it was full and were advised by Reception to park in Cardiff Arms Park which is across the road and ¿¿6 for 12 hours (do not confuse with the pay and display NCP which is directly next door to it).

Staff great, rooms tired
We spent 3 days at The Angel, choosing a Puma hotel following a wonderful experience at Billesley Manor near Stratford on Avon earlier this year.The Angel Hotel is in a great location and the initial impression is very good - helpful and friendly reception staff, particularly Sam, and a beautiful entrance hall. The premium room we were given was very disappointing; very tired carpets and decor and a view of a wall from the windows! We returned to reception and were given a different room, 301, which overlooked the Castle and was a much nicer room. The carpet was worn, decor dated, and there were even holes around some wall sockets, but it was better than the first room and it felt like the reception staff were doing the best they could for us.We enjoyed our stay in Cardiff but would be unlikely to return to The Angel until rooms have been updated, despite the great location and excellent staff. Having read other comments, we agree that the water pressure for showers and baths is poor but there are other things that let The Angel Hotel down:- such as the lack of tablecloths and grubby chairs in the dining room, and the near-identical dinner menu when we ate-in on Saturday and Monday! Breakfast was good, but the refrigeration unit for fruit etc is unbelievably loud and should be attended to. Seems trivial, but disappointing for a 4star hotel, and way below the level of our previous experience at a Puma Hotel. On checkout, we found several bar charges on our account despite the fact we had chosen to pay cash for drinks. A bit worrying, but fortunately we spotted this and reception staff were happy to adjust the bill accordingly.We were so impressed with Billesley Manor that we became members of the Puma Hotel 'club'.We travel frequently and thought we'd always be looking for the nearest Puma Hotel, but now we are not so sure.I guess we need to look more carefully at Trip Advisor rather than assume all Pumas are the same!
