Good location for Queens Day
We stayed four nights and the location was excellent especially for the Queens Day celebrations as everything was an easy walk away. Check in/check out was quick, the taxi to the airport was organised by the hotel and staff were efficient. The room was large, so was the bathroom with a separate toilet and the ice machine down the hall was a bonus. I got the impression that this is a hotel more for business than couples. No complaints.

Excellent location - shame about the customer service
I was really pleased with the hotel, it was well located and the rooms were clean and generally well presented. I had read some reviews prior to making my booking and i was concerned that there may be some noise from other guests late at night and also from a nearby bar, thankfully we didnt not hear anything from anyone, in fact we hardly bumped into any opther guests at all. it was a shame there was not tea/coffee facility in the room, but this was avaliabe from the bar area downstairs and in many currounding bars and cafes. the real bugbear i have with the hotel was the reception staff, while their English was excellent, there was not a cheery smile to be seen, severly lacking in customer service skill. It takes no effort at all to be warm and welcoming, afterall, you are front of house and the customers first impression of the hotel. check in and out was painfully slow and not helped by a glum face before me. other than that, we really enjoyed our stay.

A relaxing stay
I have just got back to the UK after a lovely stay at this hotel. I read many Tripadvisor reports on the Hampshire hotel before booking here and to be quite honest some reports from previous guests almost put me off booking, but from my own experience I found the hotel to be just fine. I have given up trying to give a hotel this or that star rating as star ratings differ from country to country. However, I would rate this hotel a 4.25, if that makes sense. There are two entrances to the hotel so if you come in the 'back entrance' you may not be overly impressed at first glance. This is the entrance on Amstelstraat. However, the main reception area looks over the Amstel river and is quite pleasant. I asked for and got a quiet internal-facing room, looking over an internal courtyard. No view but very quiet, I never heard a mouse squeak the whole time I was there. The people who complained about not being able to figure out how to use the lights in the room, in one tripadvisor comment, must be thick. You insert your key card into a slot and the lights work normally. The bathroom is a delight and beds very comfortable. We chose not to eat at the hotel but one room service meal was very tasty. There are so many places to eat I would not worry too much about the hotel but I have heard that the breakfasts at 8 Euro per person are very good. You can easily reach the hotel via trams 4 & 9 from Centraal train station. You stop at about the 4th stop, rembrandt square, which has a very good sculpture of 16th century soldiers in it to help you identify it. As you exit the tram (with your back to the tram) and look left, that is Amstelstraat. The hotel is about 200m along the road, where tramline works are in process. Maybe avoid a room above where tram works are being done, until end June 2013, although we saw no work whatsoever while there. the tram ride is about 2.70 Euro pp. You can get to the central station from Schipol by going underground at the airport to platform 4. This costs about 8.50 euro pp. There is no digital advice telling you what station is coming next, but it's about the 4th stop to the Central station. When you exit the station, look left for tram departure point 'A', about 150 metres away. Get on a 4 or a 9 and pay the driver. If you are in Amsterdam for more that 3 days get a multipass ticket and dont buy a new one every day. The only downside to the hotel rooms were the stained (but vacuumed and non-sticky) carpets. But the beds are a delight and you have easy-to use airconditioning. If you exit the amstel river side, turn right and about 40 metres on your left is the boat taxi station or if you exit the amstel river side of the hotel, go left about 600 metres to tour boats. Have a foo stay!

Problems with security and poor treatment
As soon as we arrived in the hotel, we deposited all of our money in our room¿¿¿s locker. On the second day, after spending a whole day visiting the city, we came back to our room and found that the locker was not opening with the password we programmed. We called and someone came to open the safe. When we looked into it, our wallets and purses were there, but later, when we went to get more money from the purses, we realized that all of it was gone. We spoke to the responsible for the front desk to expose the situation and she said that the first thing we had to do was to go to the Police and ask them for a report. When we came back with it, we spoke to the General Manager and he treated us in a very unpleasant way, saying that there was no proof that we had that amount of money in the safe and that it was really gone, suggesting that we could be up to some scheme and doubting our integrity. He said all we could do was to show the Police Report to the insurance company, but we did not hire one.The hotel may have a serious security issue that is being deliberately ignored by the management team. As a customer, I would also like to highlight the very rude and poor treatment we received when exposing this situation.

Very disappointed by this mediocre hotel
We stayed Easter weekend, March 29-31, 2013 so I am too late to post this review on Booking.com where we reserved the hotel, so I want to share my review with TripAdvisor readers. We have stayed in Amsterdam many many many times in several different hotels of the same level, as well as in hotels both higher and lower in scale. We were overall quite disappointed by our stay at the Hampshire Rembrandt Square.First of all we could not locate the hotel - there is no sign visible from the street nor from Rembrandt Square. So if you book there be very sure how to find the place. Next, the hotel staff had a strangly arrogant attitude. For example, you need a room key to work the lobby elevator. We had two keys, but one would not work for the elevator. I asked the front desk to make me a different one. She said if it works in the room it works in the elevator. I said show me. She came by and swiped the card about 10 times before it finally worked. I said "see?". She said "it works!". I said I am not swiping the card 10 times each time I get in the elevator. She said let's try again. This time I counted: 12 times. I said 'Please just make me a new key'. She stomped back to the reception desk, angrily made a new key and slapped it on the counter and said "There! Here is you key!". Completely bewildered me. It cost her nothing to make the key and took about 5 seconds. Whereas the little demonstration at the elevator took much much more time and effort. Then in the room, the prior occupant had stopped the bathroom sink so the water would not go down. Even worse, ugly stuff like vomit and mushrooms were coming up. I called the desk no less than 3 times, asked the person who came to check the mini bar, and had to insist that they fix the sink or give us a new room. After a long while a handyman came with a plunger. He plunged that sink for about 20 minutes up and down up and down and the ugly stuff that came up was sickening. I called reception to ask for a different room but they refused. When the plumber announced that all was well, he left the sink with the stopper removed and the bowl still full of all the crud the had extracted. I had to clean it myself! The mini bar is a story in itself too. It is full, but locked so you can't open it. You must call the reception to get authorization to open it. And then if you even so much as move an item it is charged to your room. BUT they offer to empty it for you if you want to use the fridge for your own stuff, but you have to pay an outrageous amount (like 28 euros? don't recall) for the "restocking" fee. What a joke.If you read the brochure on the desk it says they don't have WiFi in the rooms but you have to connect with a cable. But there is no cable so you have to go to the desk to get one. Then it doesn't work anyway. Luckily we were able to pick up the free WiFi in the room so no problem.Even the basic simple things were not right: the lighting in the bathroom was abysmal, the shower water would become scalding hot, then cold. We had no hot water whatsoever on our last day, Sunday, so could not take showers before leaving! It was a double room, but the bathroom had only a single hook for both of our towels (4 towels in total). Why don't good hotels do the small stuff right: adequate towel hooks, sufficient place to arrange toiletries, good lighting, etc.??In the hotel restaurant the Flo, a French bistro chain, we imagined that the surley head waitress had been given special training to be particularly nasty and unfriendly so that we would feel like we were truly in a real French restaurant. I never saw the likes of it. Even when she was across the room we could feel her uneasy presence. Don't dare ask for another carafe of water!Anyway, the room itself was comfortable and the bed good quality. There was an ice machine in the hallway (glad my room wasn't next to it because it is quite noisy when the ice comes out.
