Excellent views, friendly staff.
We stayed here for the bank holiday weekend. The hotel is very nice and easy to get to by taxi from the station. The rooms are spacious and functional. The room looked out to sea (you have to pay more for these rooms). The Spa was lovely with nice pools and facilities. The bar was nice with a very good singer on Friday night. All the staff at reception and in the bars were extremely courteous and helpful. The only let down was that the balcony did not have a table or chairs, which is a little odd! Overall, very positive.

Afternoon Tea
Spent a very relaxing couple of hours here today as part of wife's 40th birthday celebration. Never tried afternoon tea before and it was a lovely experiences. We ate at the Tempus At Tides restaurant which has spectacular views around Cardiff Bay. We were first given the opportunity to "smell" the various teas on offer. Teas then arrived in huge pots, enough for 6-7 cupfuls per pot. We were then given a variety of finger sandwiches followed by a huge choice of cakes. Food and teas were very nice indeed. Staff were excellent- highly professional, accommodating and courteous. We were never rushed at any point and it took 2 hours to get through the teas and the food- this was very relaxing and allowed conversation to flow. The hotel is immaculately clean and many people were enjoying drinks on the balcony. We didn't stay overnight but would be very tempted to do so in the future. Cardiff has a luxury 5* Hotel to be proud of! Afternoon tea at the St. David's hotel is highly recommended as a dining experience.

Time hasn't been kind...
My wife and I stayed at the St. Davids Hotel in December of 2012, we were attending a Christening near Merthyr Tydfil the next day, so thought it would be nice to spend the day in Cardiff beforehand. We arrived at the hotel and received a complimentary upgrade to the Castell Cilgerran suite, which is always a good way to start your stay. Our suite was lovely, with a huge living room area, office area, a nice size bedroom and bathroom. The room was situated at the end of one of the floors, and offered a dual aspect view of Cardiff bay, with a large "wrap round" balcony. The shower which is an open wet room type affair, seemed to be altogether quite interesting, however, in practice was completely daft, with water spilling out all over the bathroom floor, making for an interesting if not challenging journey back to the bedroom.I had stayed at the St Davids hotel many years ago on business, and remember being very impressed with hotel, spa and food, so I was looking forward to our little break. After a walk around the Christmas market my wife and I returned to the hotel to spend some time in the Spa before dinner. Unfortunately the Spa felt a little tired and run down, and the changing rooms felt particularly low rent and grubby. After an hour or so in the Spa it was time to get ready for dinner, which we had booked in the hotel restaurant Tempus at Tides, the restaurant has both a contemporary and classic decor style about it, and feels comfortable and inviting. Unfortunately the food didn't meet the standards of decor, the menu is varied, with lots of old favourites. The steak I ordered came significantly under done, and returning it to the kitchen resulted in my single piece of steak being "hacked up" into several smaller pieces, which were then carbonised so as not to have a repeat of the return reason!Needless to say I promptly returned my food and asked for the bill, which I have to say was minus my main course. My wife's main course was equally disappointing, however, slightly more edible than mine, all in all, our dinner was spoilt because of the poor way in which the issue with my steak had been handled.Upon returning to our room, I ordered room service, as eating two mouthfuls of rare steak and tiny starter hadn't made a dent in my appetite. I thought I would play it safe and order a sandwich, the food arrived promptly, but in honesty I was extremely disappointed. My roast beef sandwich had to have been made with the cheapest cut of roast beef known to man, sinewy, underdone and tough, made with bread which was starting to curl at the edges. The next morning neither one of us was looking forward to breakfast given the track record we'd had with food in this hotel, but we were pleasantly surprised, all in all breakfast wasn't as awful as we'd expected. It was Sunday morning and was clear the staff we overwhelmed by the amount of guests for breakfast, so tables weren't being cleared quickly, in fact our toast and coffee took 30 minutes to arrive, a number of the dishes in the buffet weren't replenished in a timely fashion which just created queues of people standing around with half full plates of food which were getting colder by the minute.I believe all feedback is important, and sometimes negative feedback is more important than positive, if the hotel food had been better, our stay would have been far far better, and with some very basic changes, what is a stunning looking hotel could easily become a stunning hotel to stay in!

Unfortunately not the hotel it once was
We stayed at the St Davids several times between 2000 - 2006 but this was the first stay for some years and I must admit I wasn't aware that it was no longer a Rocco Forte Hotel. Whilst the location remains the best in Cardiff I'm afraid I must agree with what a lot of the other recent reviewers are saying. It's all looking a bit tired and there's a general lack of attention to detail in the housekeeping - light bulbs not working, drawers without any 'insides' - and one of our bath towels, although laundered, looked like someone had used it to clean a motorbike with, literally covered with big black oily stains! At the old St David's there always used to be a real sense that you'd 'arrived' somewhere special - uniformed doormen, fresh flowers and fruit on reception. All that's gone now. The frankly tasteless dried flower arrangements in the revolving hotel entrance door, the spa, and elsewhere, sadly sum it up for me - under Principal Hayley group ownership the St David's has lost all its sense of style. The only part of the hotel that seems to have had any recent money spent on it is the bar/dining room, and frankly they shouldn't have bothered. The once classy and stylish decor now looks more like something you'd get in a Wetherspoons pub. If this had been our first visit maybe we'd have seen things differently, but remembering what it used to be meant we were, overall, disappointed.

A really lovely stay with excellent service.
I stayed at the St David Hotel and Spa last Thursday night, ahead of a conference on the Friday. Overall I had great stay and would happily recommend the hotel to others and can't wait to return myself. On arrival both the receptionist and concierge went out of their way to make me welcome at the hotel and I received the same warm welcome and excellent service in the restaurant later that evening. The hotel itself is in a prime location with amazing views over Cardiff Bar. As I was driving to the hotel I was fearful that there wouldn't be any parking available, however the hotel does have it's own (smallish) car park and literally right next door is an NCP which for 24 hours is fairly reasonable, I think ¿¿7.00 from memory. I stayed on the first floor in a room facing south and had a lovely view and plenty of outdoor space on a balcony. The bedroom itself was plenty big enough for a business over-nighter, however I think I'd look into upgrading to a suite if I came back for a longer weekend stay. All furniture and fixtures in the room and bathroom were in good order and the room came well equipped with everything you'd expect plus robes and slippers for use at the spa.I spent around an hour in the Spa before dinner; there is also a Gym on-site but I decided to give that a miss in favor of a more thorough exploration of the pool, sauna and Jacuzzi! All of the facilities were of a very high standard and I left feeling thoroughly refreshed and relaxed... That said if I'm being honest I wouldn't think that the Spa at this hotel will be winning any awards any time soon; it's a nice well run and well maintained facility and it's a real bonus for guests staying at the hotel though. Finally I found my way to restaurant and both the food and service were truly excellent. Having a quick glance at the bar menu I think I'd have been quite content to just eat there; however the rib eye steak with red win jus came cooked exactly as ordered and I certainly didn't regret eating in the restaurant. I was quite early for Breakfast the following morning however the staff again did everything possible to accommodate me.For a hotel of it's age it's doing really very well, the only slight shame was that the outside of the hotel did need a bit of a spruce up! I know we're just coming out of winter but some of the plants around the restaurant already need cutting back, someone needs to remove a few spiders webs on the outside of windows and in general the outside of the hotel everywhere could do with a good jet-wash... however that said inside in an entirely different story. Everything is wonderfully well kept with great modern facilities. The biggest draw for coming back however would have to be the great staff and service received, in particular from Jeff the Concierge. I would very much like to return and think I'll be looking for book a romantic weekend away in the summer.
