'Only three roms available!' so quickly press 'booking'... Better not! Why? There are only three rooms in the 'hotel'. Don't know where to start the review. The place is consequently at the lowest end. The best about it: it is not extremely dirty and the staff in the pub (where you get your room key - and a key there is still a real key) is friendly; there are worse things in life than a bad hotel and most importantly, you can survive it. So, if you are looking for a low budget overnight stay and not even one room at any other place is available, go for it. In short: rooms are small, noisy and equiped with old furniture, beds/mattresses are worn out, towels are old, it is not easy to get a second key, and many more things like this to make sure that Portland Arms is consequently at the low end. 'Forgotten something'? No problem: just get a toothbrush or (!) toothpaste for 1.50 ¿¿, shore gel/shampoo for 1.95 ¿¿. Or earplugs or one aspirin for 0,50 ¿¿. And better go for it, it might be money well spent since the pub is just in the floor below, the main street it on front of the building and the dispenser for the shower lotion is empt. Advice: since there is no en-suite bathroom, but one for all guests, better get up early and use it first... Even then, do not expect that you will find it really clean. So, why should you book 'Portland Arms'? I really do not know, since there are many better places for the lower rates in town. The good thing about it: absolutely great business case for the owner. Three small rooms on top of a pub can generate a monthly income of 6,000 ¿¿ (!). That's wonderful - but just only for the owner.

As compassionate and generous as I would like to be I believe that any room for rent in the U.K. cannot expect more than two stars for a room without a private bath. The modest room was clean, lockable, with a courteous staff, is certainly worth two stars. Additionally, the absence of a private bath is something that should be mentioned in any listings in the future.

Stayed one night in a small room with 2 large beds in it and not much else. Room was not en-suite although this was not clear to me when booking. Sound proofing was poor - I could hear everything going on next door. There is no car park, so had to park on the street (paying).However, the pub is within walking distance of the centre of town, and the room and bathrrom were very clean, so I was (just) satisfied.

Stayed here 23/3/13 and had the double room. The room is OK in terms of size and is equipped with tea and coffee, towels and you can borrow an ironing board, iron and hair dryer if required. Our room was directly above the pub, so quite noisy as it is open until at least mid-night, but just bring some earplugs if you want to sleep...or have a drink!The bathroom and toilet is out in the corridor (not en suite) but this was OK for one night and didn't have to wait to use them. No noise from other guests when we stayed.The room itself could do with a bit of a tidy up in terms of a lick of paint and a deep clean, but as it was cheap, so you get what you pay for. Bring some flip flops as it is lino flooring and you need to get between the room and the bathroom. The floors are clean but its cold on your toes! No toiletries were supplied for our stay but you can buy them from the bar if you don't bring them with you.Staff were very friendly, helpful and polite, and nothing was too much trouble. (Breakfast not included in our tariff.) Good central location as the pub is about a 15 minute walk through Jesus Green to city centre.

Me and my girlfriend came up to Cambridge for a couple of nights looking for a lovely time in a hotel near the river, and thats exactly what we got.We chanced upon The Portland Arms and were greeted with stunning customer service and we were even allowed to check out the room before deciding on staying.What we got with the room was exactly what we were looking for, modern styling, clean bathrooms, comfortable beds, a television with freeview, fast internet connection via wi-fi and a nice pub downstairs to hang out in.We even got to have the beer garden to ourselves for a drink with one of the barmen after closing.If you are looking for great value for money, to be near the river, close to amenities in a nice hotel above a bar/music venue then this is the place for you.We had a lovely time and recommend it highly.
