Check in was indifferent.The room was OK in size and facilities, but reeked of cigarette smoke. With the window open there was some city centre/night club noise, but I've had worse.The ¿¿¿free, unlimited¿¿¿ (actually the instructions they give you say there is a limit) WiFi worked the first time, but I could not log back on, no matter what I did.My check in experience suggested that they would not welcome complaints, so I put up with it, but will not be staying again.

Stayed in a double room April 4th to 6th. Location? By train, well it`s right next to the station, couldn`t be more convenient. By car, you just follow the signs through the city centre to the station and, if you arrive outside peak hours, you could get one of the free hotel parking spaces front or rear, which is great for a city centre. It`s 10 minutes walk to the quayside, the Baltic and the Sage in one direction, or into the heart of the city centre in the other. Hotel? It`s a grand looking building with a lofty entrance and massive chandeliers. Our 2nd floor double room faced the back on the left-hand side above a bar on the ground floor and a function room on the first floor. We could hear the station announcements until the evening, the function room disco until midnightish, the bar music later still. This wasn`t a problem because we were out so much or tired but if noise bothers you, ask for a room higher up and on the right hand side of the hotel. The room was well-decorated, a good size and the bathroom was gleamingly clean. Reception staff were friendly: getting fresh milk instead of UHT was no problem, there was a small fridge in the room. Breakfasts were the standard cereals and hot buffet - fine. All in all, it was a pleasant place to stay and - given the city centre location - good value. I`d go back.

Paid ¿¿160 for 2 x nights room only. Breakfast quite expensive at nearly ¿¿10 per head - though was very fresh and tasty. Great beds in our room which was difficult to find due to a maze of corridors and poor signage - 237 it was. A very long hike from the lifts and because it is so far away the Victorian water system struggles with the hot water(though there is a sign saying to run hot tap for a couple of minutes which is fair enough). Room was comfortable and clean - room service was efficient and the food good when we ordered. Could do with bigger towels as they are very small. Location of hotel is great for whatever you want - Bit noisy in middle of night(3am) but you have to expect that in a city like Newcastle on a saturday night. Leisure club a bit basic but ok. Overall a good visit.

We booked as a stag party, let me get that in the open now. A stag party of nine men averaging 30 years old from all backgrounds. To say we were treated like criminals before we arrived would be entirely accurate. One of the guys booked five rooms at a great rate of ¿¿75 per room a night. A few days before we were due to arrive the booking member received a call to ask if we were a stag party which was correct so he confirmed. He was told we would need to pay a deposit of ¿¿30 per person since we were. Clearly the hotel have had bad experiences in the past but this is close to prejudice... So we agreed.Anyway we arrived, I arrived straight from a business trip in full suit and the rest of our party in smart casual dress from the train station and straight to check in. Where the interrogation started. Who is staying in which room with who, full pay, who is paying the deposits, deposits cash only etc.... So we checked in, departed with ¿¿30 per head in cash only deposits (cash only deposits? Pretty sure the tax man would like to see all deposits declared if taken but the hotel, but I digress) and. All head off to the rooms to drop back, quick change and get out for some lunch. The lifts are small so four go in the lift jd the remaining five take the stairs to the second floor where we all meet again, walk to the rooms and pair off. Now our room door had just closed and I hadn't even put my bag on the bed when the door knocks. We are greeted by a member of staff who has received a complaint that "the stag party" we're shouting loudly and disturbing guests. What a lot of nonsense. No shouting took place and this member of staff would put Olympic athletes to utter shame with the speed she must have received the complaint, sprinted to the lift or up the stairs and made it to our room before I had even had a chance to loosen my tie. We then had a lecture on that this was a no nonsense hotel and that we would not be tolerated if we were to cause trouble. I agreed that this was correct and the we were in no way here to cause trouble android she went.We left had some lunch,mopped in for a shower then left for the night to return in the early hours for bed. We all checked out the following morning before the 11am check out time, we then had to wait around until our rooms were checked and eventually we given our cash deposits back with no thanks or apology for our business. Prejudice or what?I won't go into the detail of the rooms with all the chipped furniture were bottles had been opened, we all took pictures ready to be accused of the deed.To the hotel... Great location right next to the station and within walking distance of all attractions, shops and night life. Rooms were nice and well appointed.To be honest after being treated like a criminal and being prejudged before arrival I cant honestly reflect the quality of the hotel in my review. I would return but not in a group to be judged again. We were paying customer who didn't remotely cause any trouble to the hotel or its guests. There are a number of other great hotels in newcastle center, give them your business.

We are a group of ladies that come to Newcastle every year to enjoy the wonderfull city and its night life. We have stayed at this hotel for approx 15 years now and it just seems to get better each time we come. The staff are always very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. They always look after us very well and we could not ask for better service. The breakfast is great and always a varied choice. The rooms I have stayed in have always been good and are kept very clean. This year we did have one problem - the bar manager of the downstairs bar! We were enjoying ourselves in the bar on Saturday afternoon and were playing some games - which we do every year. The bar manager said that this wasn't allowed. This was a bit a surprise to us as last year the Bar Manager had held a target whilst we fired bows and arrows at him! We promptly left the bar which left it completly empty. We are a bit noisy and tend to laugh a lot but other that that we are very well behaved. We would have spent about 5 hours in the bar and spent on food and drink approx ¿¿800-¿¿1000 that day and some more the day after. Shame really as other years we have always spent alot of time in this bar.However on the whole we love the hotel and will be returning next year - just hope the Bar Manager has chilled out or moved on. Roll on next year!
