We were looking for a comfortable base from which to explore Hereford and visit the annual Literature Festival at Hay. We chose The Steppes based on location, photos and the friendly response received from Lin when we rang directly to book but we werent prepared for the amazingly high standards encountered in all aspects of our stay . Our room in the tastefully extended chocolate box thatched cottage was modern,comfortable and enhanced by little touches such as a small fridge and a complimentary bottle of fresh milk to go with the well stocked tea and coffee making facilities; fresh cakes in our room on arrival and every evening of our stay; boot/shoe tray to remove the worry of what to do with wet/dirty footwear on wetter days, a full sized hairdryer and the siting of adequate sockets near to the dressing table and mirror.The same thoughtful attention to detail showed in the miniature torch attached to the room key for lighting the way from the parking area to the rooms and the delightful surprise when returning to the cottage late at night to find motion acitvated lighting all the way from the carpark to our room! Martin and Lin are lovely welcoming hosts who seem to have thought of everything a guest could need (and more!)and manage to achieve the perfect balance of providing high quality freshly home prepared food and a friendly attentive service in the most comfortable and attractive surroundings without intruding.We will definitely return to this B and B! Highly recommended!

This B&B is in a fantastic location and the rooms are comfortable and exceptionally clean. The personal service was obvious from the moment I booked as I was sent an email that very day asking if I required anything in particular and giving general info. The B&B rooms were chalet style and one is given a key so it is possible to come and go as one wishes. A charming garden with seating and pond is there to be enjoyed by guests. The owners have an eye for detail as the rooms came equipped with a portable make up mirror, corkscrew, wine glasses, face flannels, pen, pencil, as well as the usual tea and coffee facilities on expects ( Proper coffee and good quality tea with pot too). A good quality plug in hair dryer with nozzle is provided ( Hooray! And take note Mandarin Oriental!!!!). Breakfast was superb with eggs prided by the owners chickens, good quality bacon, local mushrooms, black pud etc. home made bread and coissants, fresh berries, yoghurt and a range of cereals gives choice for all tastes. A peaceful stay, smack bang in the countryside but close enough to walk to the local pub (0.5 miles). No traffic noise, wonderful dawn chorus and plenty of space. Highly recommend.

Stayed here because of the fantastic reviews and can only agree with what's written below. Anyone who couldn't find it in their heart to give this place a five star review has a screw loose. It's beautiful and the owners clearly are on a labour of love. You won't be disappointed.

This is a real find, we'll worth going down the un sealed road to find it. The rooms are well fitted out and very comfortable. The annexe has lovely views over the garden and the bird life is a welcome bonus.Breakfast is very good.My only complaint is the pile of pointless cushions placed on the bed. I am told that this is fashionable. If that is the case than I hope that it is a fashion that will quickly die. Unfortunately it does seem to be pretty widespread at the moment!Despite the cushions, I would have no hesitation in returning to The Steppes, it is a super place.

This is such a picturesque B&B in a wonderfully quiet location. I sat and read a book by the fish pond in the evening sun with only the sound of birds to disturb me. The rooms are modern, tastefully decorated and fully equipped with some lovely touches. As a female traveller, I am frustrated when the plugs are nowhere near the mirror, not here!! The plugs, hairdryer (full size) and mirror were all placed together. There was a fridge int he room and Lin had provided fresh milk for use in the wide range of hot beverages available on the tea tray. The bed was a good quality sprung mattress with plenty of extra blankets if needed. All in all I was looking for somewhere quiet and relaxing even though I was on a business trip and this is certainly it. I would certainly return here either for business or pleasure. It was a real pleasure!!
