Q: What is the deposit requirement for rental cars outside the U.S. and Canada?

A: For rentals outside of the U.S. and Canada, you may need as much as $1000 in available funds for deposit, and you will be required to use a credit card. Debit cards will not be accepted for deposit on international rentals.

If optional items are elected for purchase (e.g., insurance), additional available credit will be required. Please note that the amount of available credit that is necessary varies, depending on the type of car and the rental period.

Q: What should I know about renting a car outside the U.S. and Canada?

A:

Car rental age policy: Most countries require you to be about 25 when renting a car. Maximum age limits also vary by country and can be as low as 65. If you're concerned, contact your car rental agency and ask what their age limits are.

Driving over the border: Each agency has their own rules about driving out of the country with their car. Contact your agency to make sure their rules fit your plans. Have questions on necessary travel documents?

Special needs: Need something extra for your car, such as car seat or GPS? Contact your agency to ensure they have what you need when you pick up your car.

Q: What type of documents do I need to rent a car outside of the United States?

A: To rent a car outside of the U.S., the driver will need to present a driver's license and credit card. Both should match the driver's name. (Even if you paid for the car rental reservation on the Hotwire site, the driver will need to present his/her own credit card at pick-up.).

For credit card deposits, you may need as much as $1000 in available funds.

If optional items are elected for purchase (e.g., insurance), additional available credit will be required. Please note that the amount of available credit that is necessary varies, depending on the type of car and the rental period.

If you're a non-U.S driver, the same guidelines apply. However, if your driver's license is in a language other than English, an International Driver's Permit is recommended. In all cases, a valid driver's license issued in your home country must be provided whether or not you possess an International Driver's Permit. You will not be allowed to rent a car with only an International Driver's Permit.

Q: For non-discounted, regular-rate international car rentals, what currency will I be paying?

A: Total cost for regular rate rentals includes estimated taxes and fees. Total charges are billed at the time of rental, with final pricing in the local currency.

Q: Are non-U.S. drivers allowed to rent on Hotwire?

A: Yes. At check-in, the driver will need to present a driver's license and credit card - both should match the driver's name. (Even if you paid for the car rental reservation on the Hotwire site, the driver will need to present his/her own credit card at pick-up.)

If the driver's license is in a language other than English, an International Driver's Permit is recommended. In all cases, a valid driver's license issued in your home country must be provided (whether or not you possess an International Driver's Permit). You will not be allowed to rent a car with only an International Driver's Permit.

For rental deposits in the U.S. and Canada, you should have at least $200 in available funds. If you are using a debit card, the car rental company will place a hold on your deposit amount, and you will not have access to these funds until the car is returned. For rentals outside of the U.S. and Canada, you may need as much as $1000 in available funds, and you will be required to use a credit card for deposit. Debit cards will not be accepted for deposit on international rentals.

If optional items are elected for purchase (e.g., insurance), additional available credit will be required. Please note that the amount of available credit that is necessary varies, depending on the type of car and the rental period.

Note that many car rental companies will not accept a debit card as a deposit when the vehicle is picked up, and you will be denied rental. You can choose to see only results for companies that accept debit cards for deposit at pick-up. Since this will limit your search range, the best deal available might not show up in your search results.

Be aware that car rental companies will not accept a prepaid or 'stored value' card, including those showing a MasterCard or Visa logo.

Q: Are travel documents required when crossing borders in a rental car?

A: Yes. The required documents are based on your citizenship and country of residence.

For U.S. citizens:

  • Effective January 1, 2007, passports are required for everyone flying between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Bermuda, and the Caribbean with the exception of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • Effective January 1, 2008, passports will be required for everyone traveling to or from the United States to all international destinations.

Since almost all Hotwire bookings are final, we recommend confirming your passport's validity before you book any international travel on our site.

The State Department's site can help you with getting a passport. You can also call the U.S. National Passport Information Center at (877) 4USAPPT. Please allow 6 weeks for passport application processing.
