Small but very nice hotel! :)
I was looking for a cheap but nice hotel arond Kyoto and I came across this hotel. We had a Japanese style room, no bath (had to use hotel public bath), but toilet with washlet inside the room. Water heater, hair dryer, TV (I don't know why but the channel can only be view in the morning). The hotel was very nice but the only thing is that they don't have microwave, but the convenience stores across the street was very nice to let me use theirs. 9000 yen a night for a room for 5 ppl, not bad at all.The hotel is inside the bus route line of central Kyoto, so you can use 1 day pass from the nearest bus station.

Between hotel and ryokan
With a perfect location in Kyoto, this hotel is friendly like a family ryokan.It has very confortable and large Japanese style rooms.Staff is so helpfull and devoted.Do not miss the Japanese breakfast nor the onsen.Very quiet except when a bunch of American teenagers had their stop over.There are plent of delicious restaurants around.Shopping and easy nightlife just accross the river is amazing.Easy walk to Gion and other historic districts and temples.

Make sure to ask for total room price
In search of a new place to stay after making the mistake of staying at a gueshouse, i saw hotel iroha and inquired for room rate. I was told 7350¿¿. Upon checkout i was charged 14700¿¿. Apparently the receptionist quoted me a per head rate. The hotel is quite old and has a funny smell, its only salvation is being right next to the subway station. But it os absolutely not worth paying 14700¿¿ per night! Such a rip off!

Incredible hospitality
We stayed here for three nights at the start of our holiday - caught the train from Osaka directly to Kyoto- and stayed in Japanese room (four in a room). The whole experience was excellent. The service set a standard that was a benchmark for our three week Japan holiday. The onsen was excellent and the location was fantastic- easy walk to seek all the key attractions and 50 metres from a subway station. The staff were so attentive and helpful and we had no complaints. A great place to start a holiday.

Less like a ryokan, more like a college dorm with floor mats
We stayed in a Japanese style room with bathroom & shower for 1 night. We also added on the Kaiseki dinner (which did not taste very fresh )In summary, Iroha is not a good value for the money. I have not figured out why the other reviewers (many with kids) feel this is a good value. If you want a real ryokan experience, book a real ryokan, and book early. Or, book at the wonderful hotel Okura (where we also stayed) for 20% less cost and put your matress on the floor :) Iroha was less like a ryokan, and more like a college dorm with floor mats. Being familiar with Kyoto hotel prices, I would say that hotel Iroha would have been a good value at about half to 60% of the rate they charged.Pros: The staff was extremely friendly & helpful. The location is great!Cons: The room was way outdated- probably should have been renovated a decade ago- and had a stale, musty, mildew smell. The bathroom was extremely small and cramped- almost couldn't turn around in the shower. The entire building feels like you are in a college dormatory. Finally, the Kaiseki dinner was not nearly as tasty as the same food you can find elsewhere in Kyoto, and the breakfast was second rate.
