Treated like a king
My wife and I stayed at this hotel with some friends because we wanted to be close to Court Ave which is a nice place to go out. The hotel is very nice and I love the history. Some people don't like that they haven't fully updated the hotel with all new fixtures and such but I think having some of the original things is neat. The customer service with this hotel is amazing. The hotel has a van that will take its guests anywhere in downtown 24 hours a day. The night we stayed was cold and raining and that van turned out to be a lifesaver. We went down to the front desk and asked to be taken somewhere and we were off. They gave us a card and said to call when we were done. Around 1 am we were ready to come back. Made a phone call and within 5 minutes the van was there to pick us up. Once back to the hotel I asked the driver where a gas station was to get something to eat. He said it was about 7 blocks away, and instead of letting me walk he said he would take me. This hotel is not a Hilton but I would recommend it to anyone and would definitely stay here again!!

Room noise is a problem
The location is fine, and the service is good, but unfortunately this is a hotel past its prime. The lobby and restaurant are very nice, but the rooms are dated and just not what you'd expect in a modern hotel. The heating/ac system is something out of 1950, rooms stil have old, non-flat screen TVs, and the mattress and pillows are just plain awful. The worst part though is the noise between rooms. The walls are PAPER thin at best. Only stay here if you're comfortable hearing every single sound from the room next door.

Like staying at Grandma's house
There's nothing wrong with this hotel. It was a place to put my head. It was close to the downtown area, so that was a convenient feature and the only reason we chose this particular hotel. What was once a (probably) beautiful, historic building has been paneled over with a sad modern facade. It doesn't work well. The rooms are old and out of date. There is a layer of dust and grime everywhere you look. It smells old, feels old and looks old. The walls are paper thin and we could hear toilets flushing all down the hall throughout the night. The bed linens are not nice or soft and neither is the pillow. I'll quote my husband. "I'm surprised I'm not paralized from the neck down after a night on that pillow." If you can choose a different place, do so. If this is a last resort to be within walking distance to the convention center... it will do.

Older but nice
The Hotel Fort Des Moines is an older hotel in the western part of downtown Des Moines. It could use a little upgrading but it is still a very nice hotel. It gives one a feel of a differnt era. The hotel is connected to the skywalk system. One can get to the Court Avenue District and much of downtown. The Django restaurant is part of the hotel and is great. The food is fabulous. It is a very popular restaurant and reservations are necessary. The Hotel Fort Des Moines was an overall good experience.

Worst hotel ive ever stayed at!
I stayed here with my friends for state pool tourny and we wont ever give The Fort des moines hotel another penny ever again! Nasty outdated way overpriced! $175 with all the extra parking fees and taxes for a wednesday night. Dirty floors, mold on ceiling in bathroom, mattress on bed was maybe 6 inches think- as comfortable as a pull out bed in a couch. No air flow in room, window screwed shut, no A/C. Worst place i have ever stayed at. We are all just normal average guys who work hard for our money and were just looking to get what we pay for! Live and learn i guess, but lesson learned on this nightmare place! I would really like to know if the management has ever stayed in a room here? Im gonna say probably not! In rating this room, their should be a 0 spot cause thats what i would give this place! Please dont make the same mistake as we did and dont give this poorly managed place any money. Honestly i wouldnt stay in this hotel if i got free rooms and wouldnt give the free rooms to anyone i were friends with. Lol
