Great hotel, friendly staff, convenient location!
I was in Tokyo on business for a week and opted to stay in this hotel, which is very well-located, directly above Shinagawa station, one of the main stations of Tokyo which has connections via the metro, the regular trains and the shinkansen network. It is just a few minutes by metro to the very centre of Tokyo and far less cramped and crowded. The hotel is situated on the high floors of a tower, so you have great views of the city (if you are on the right side of the building - ask to change sides if you can - I did and they were very happy to do so). There is almost no traffic noise, although you can hear the trains passing through ever so slightly, which some people have complained about. I find that strange as the noise is minimal and for a city centre location it is very quiet in my opinion. The room was large and very comfortable, with a nice sized bathroom with proper 'wet room' shower and decent sized bathtub (I'm over 6ft and struggle in most Japanese baths!), big sofa, wide flat screen TV, free wireless and cable internet with good speeds, etc.The breakfast is pretty good with buffet and a la carte options. But what really makes this place is the staff - they are extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel manager, Ben Johnson, was front of house on the concierge desk almost the entire time and his advice about the city was very helpful indeed. I was in Tokyo for business, but he would be very helpful for tourists too I am sure.I highly recommend this hotel when in Tokyo.

loved this hotel!!!!
My husband was here on business and we stayed at this lovely hotel First of all, it is in a great location--very close to the train station so you are able to get everywhere from here. The staff here is amazing. The concierge. Ben Johnson, and his assistant, Eri, made my trip so perfect. They were able to give clear concise and spot on recommendations. They were responsive friendly and i could not have had the time i did without them. If possible, snag a corner room. WE had a corner room on the upper floor and had a view of Mt. Fuji. Great coffee makers in the room. Fabulous bar with a great bartenders!! Nice buffet breakfast, great staff! Also i had a reflexology treatment that was AMAZING. The fitness center is very nice on the top floor with awesome veiws. Quite adequate for working out. I highly recommend this hotel for location, staff, concierge, and all around fabulous!! Actually the location is better than some of the other fancier well known hotels--and its very nice!!

Good elements, lovely staff, not a stand-out property
The Strings is conveniently located right by pivotal Shinagawa Station, with lots of cafes, food stores and coffee stops close by. The rooms are nicely designed and furnished, and the bathroom was really beautiful, with excellent toiletries and a large shower and bath space. I arrived late at night (around midnight) and there were no staff at the arrival entrance, which seemed odd. It was my first stay, so I went inside the small, empty lobby and had no idea where to go next. A phone placed on a bench said 'Call for Service', so I did; and then realised there were elevators so took them to the proper hotel lobby before anyone arrived to help me upstairs. It wasn't an issue, but if you arrive late at night at alone, it wasn't the most welcoming, or secure of hotels. Breakfast buffet was fine, with a good selection. Front desk provide a 20% discount on the price of breakfast. To obtain this, you had to check in with them before breakfast and fill in some paperwork. On the advice of colleagues, I did this on my 2nd day there but not on the first. On check-out, I asked if the same price could please be applied to both my breakfast bills, as obviously I was eligible for the discount. However, they wouldn't give me the discounted rate for both days as I had not completed the paperwork at the time. Again - fair enough, but it seemed a rather abitrary decision. Internet access was not great. I couldn't access wireless during my stay and had to use a cable. I had problems connecting on the first, and last nights and had to have someone come up to the room to check it both times. On check-out, the duty manager came and personally apologised for the internet issues. A nice gesture but wireless connectivity would have been nicer. One of my colleagues had great service from the concierge, who helped him arrange a short side-trip to Kyoto, in this very busy peak traveling season. So that was good too. The biggest drawback for me, was that my room was on a lower level floor, faced the train station, and had no double glazing. The noise of trains was very disruptive. I had to wake early every morning in any case, but if I were here on a leisurely vacation, this would have been a big issue. I'd suggest asking for a higher floor room, not facing the railway station. So - pros and cons for this hotel. It didn't really float my boat so I've rated it only 'Average'.

small hotel, great service
I used to stay hotels in Shinjuku. This time hotels in Shinjuku is fully booked and the only hotel available was The Strings at Shinagawa. I really appreciate the hotel service though it is really unexpected. The hotel is compact and located inside a business building which is a minute walk from JR Shinagawa station. The front desk is small. But the service is great. I would like to say thank you to Mr. Ken Ikuta for his help during my stay. The only negative comment is the cost. It's quite expensive compare to hotels at Shinjuku area.

Bit of a haven in the sky..
The Strings is a very international hotel set at 26th - 31st Floors of this Shinagawa Tower. It actually feels quite cosy - though its all atrium with rooms around. Very comfortable beds, good aircon and excellent WIFI. Gym has 3 treadmills with the BEST view of Tokyo ahead. Makes for a great run. Food was goo - couldn't fault breakfast (scrambled eggs good) or dinner. Wine is really expensive. Its close to Haneda (20 mins cab or train to Shinagawa Station just below). Two Starbucks very close :) This is a great business hotel. I'm not sure its very good if you want to immerse yourself in Japan or Tokyo life - but its does a great job for a weary international traveler :)
