Great stay in Shanghai
We spent ten nights at the Holiday Inn Downtown - Great Wall Wing - in Shanghai and enjoyed an excellent stay! Although the hotel is often touted as a ¿¿¿business¿¿¿ hotel, we think it offers a great location for individuals traveling for pleasure. It¿¿¿s just across the square from the Shanghai Railway Station and there is a metro station (Line 1, ¿¿¿Shanghai Railway Station¿¿¿) just around the corner. It¿¿¿s easy to get to all parts of the city ¿¿¿ including key tourist sites ¿¿¿ using the metro. You can access both airports (Pudong or Hongqiao) via the metro if you don¿¿¿t mind making a transfer to Line 2. Alternatively, directly behind the hotel is an Airport Bus (bus no. 5) with service to Pudong International Airport. So, you can easily access the Holiday Inn and then see the city¿¿¿s numerous tourist venues. The Holiday Inn has two wings and initially we arrived at the Plaza Wing by mistake (we arrived about 8:00PM and it was dark). The ¿¿¿buggy¿¿¿ (a golf cart) was sent over immediately to transport us and our luggage to the Great Wing (it¿¿¿s a quick ride through the property¿¿¿s underground parking lot). We checked in at the Executive Club and received a warm welcome. Due to our platinum status, we were upgraded to a beautiful two-room suiteThroughout our visit, we received wonderful service from all members of the Executive Club staff ¿¿¿ both during the day and during the evening ¿¿¿happy hour.¿¿¿ Each was friendly, professional and made sure we had everything we could possibly need. Also, it was great for us that they all spoke excellent English and could assist with touring ideas, use of the metro, shopping tips, etc. We felt very ¿¿¿spoiled¿¿¿ when visiting the Club and that¿¿¿s a wonderful experience! Thank you to Flora and her entire staff! The only meals we ate at the hotel were breakfast in the Yue Garden Restaurant and the wonderful snacks offered during the evening happy hour. Our accolades to the chefs who prepare these delicious foods! At Yue Garden, there is a separate seating area for Priority Club members and this is a big plus if the hotel is full and the dining area is very busy. Again, Minnie (Yue Garden¿¿¿s Manager) and her staff took great care of us!As noted above, the happy hour snacks are delicious! The Club¿¿¿s staff members replenish the dishes if they run low so there is always ample food for everyone. We also appreciate that we were able to make cocktails from top-quality liquor and mixers and we also were able to enjoy a good Chinese red wine. In closing, we had an excellent stay and appreciate the service we received from everyone! We will highly recommend the property and we plan to return to the Holiday Inn Great Wall when we next return to Shanghai!

Not as Good as Your Average Holiday Inn
For the most part this Holiday Inn was of the same value/standard as other Holiday Inns that I've been to around the world but it fell short in a few areas that really spoilt it for me.It was the first hotel I stayed at as part of a two week tour of China and it was by far the worst hotel I stayed in during my entire tour. As it was the first I looked more kindly on it at the time; I'd never been to China before so I had an open mind but as I visited more hotels around the country I realised how bad this Holiday Inn is by both global Holiday Inn standards as Chinese standards as a whole. The check-in was very slow and the staff weren't overly helpful. They didn't speak very good English, which isn't a problem for me as I speak Mandarin but it may be troublesome for some (I don't expect them to speak English and am not disappointed by that, I just thought I would include it in this review so other travellers can be prepared). Like many hotels in China they insisted on a 600 yuan deposit which is returned to you at the end of your stay. The lobby is very nice and there is a bar/cafe area which is fairly well stocked but it's very expensive. The corridors on the floors where the rooms are were disgustingly dirty. Stains all over the floor, scuffs and scrapes all over the walls from the housekeeping trollies and a horrible, musty, damp, cigarette-smoke tainted smell was everywhere.Luckily the smell of the corridors were not present in our room. The carpet was very uncomfortable, feeling like it was made out of a rope material rather than actual carpet. They do provide little slipps for you to wear, however these are quite small and as I'm a UK Size 12 it felt like putting on children's shoes so I couldn't wear them. They have a big, old CRT monitor that looked like it was from the 80s. Awful picture, awful sound. There was an alarm clock next to the bed with an iPod dock built in which I thought was a nice touch until I used it. The volume for the iPod dock is extremely, extremely quiet. This may be a measure to prevent raucous volumes disturbing other hotel guests but it was quiet to the point that it was useless. The view from our room was some skyscrapers (which is the norm in Shanghai) and they looked quite cool but the windows were so dirty it wasn't really worth it.The meals provided in the hotel were always buffet style. While there were quite a few choices on offer it was all of a mediocre standard. The staff in the dining rooms were very friendly though and were the highlight of our stay at this hotel. The hotel is located right next door to the Shanghai transtation which will probably be useful to many but it is quite far away from any sightseeing/attractions in Shanghai so you'll need to get a taxi to go pretty much anywhere else.I won't dwell on this last point as I'm not 100% sure what it was, but on the last day I woke up early (around 4am) to go to the bathroom and when I returned, I pulled the cover back and found what looked EXTREMELY like rat droppings in the bed. Needless to say I couldn't get back to sleep and was very tired for the rest of the day.I didn't complain about this at the time as it was my last day. I checked under the pillows and under the matters, and a little bit under the bed and found no mice or rats so it could've been something else but I doubt it.

Holiday inn shanghai
Good holiday inn quality. Breakfast buffet was fabulous. Advertised seafood buffet for dinner was very disappointing. Did not seem to recognize or distinguish Priority Club Gold status. Cabs outside the hotel chose which fares to accept. Staff was helpful, but did not seem to want to go above and beyond.

I really feel like I receive personal service
Stayed again on another leisure trip to Shanghai. I have commented on this hotel before but I want to write another review that the hotel deserves. This property is not the Grand Hyatt by any stretch but I give it an honest 3.5-3.75. What makes it unique is that you can always count on consistent service from a very well trained staff that tries very hard to please. Having IHG elite status, this hotel goes out of their way to recognize your status with daily extra perks. Also the 20th floor houses the exec lounge where you receive daily breakfast, very good choices, and a 2 hour happy hour from 5:30-7:30P.M. includes wine beer and mixed drinks and a variety of hot and cold appetizers which are so filling you may skip going out for dinner and spending uneeded CNY. Free wi-fi in the lounge also. I always note some people I have seen before and there seems to be a lot of frequent business travelers who stay here. It is next door to Shanghai Railway station and Metro lines 1, 3, 4. This particular trip there was one slight goof up in that the hotel had given me a room on 9th floor facing the main Blvd. (lots of auto horns honking, not good) AC unit was not working, and the room turned out to be a smoking room which I was supposed to receive a non smoking room. We spent the first of 4 nights in Room 967 but the loyalty manager Breeze cheerfully moved us to a quieter room (suite) on the 17 floor overlooking the railway square side of the building. So the hotel management came through for me. Flora and Lilly do a fantastic job serving guest in the exec floor lounge.

usual Holiday Inn, a quality stay..
Stayed there for 3 nights in a very tight scheduled business trip. Didn¿¿¿t really get much time to explore it, but it was very nice overall. We stayed in the executive level. Rooms were very clean and spacious and featured many modern amenities. The room had internet service for US$15 per day which I found to be a bit high.I didn¿¿¿t really eat much in the hotel but there are many places to eat just across the road... Breakfast was very good though, with a good choice between usual Chinese, Japanese or American breakfast.
