Wow a hot breakfast buffet!
Have stayed several times in the past. To qualify the last time was a decade ago. Southern Cross is iconic to Dunedin. The Hotel was staffed by pleasant very friendly and helpful front desk staff. Rooms cosy and well appointed. Bed very comfortable. Port'o'Call bar on premises a nice place to relax. Breakfast Buffet is a sight to behold. A conveyor toaster that actually works the first time through, unbelievable really, as universally around the world they don't. Food on the buffet was usual fare but it was fresh and hot!!. (how many times have you overpaid for luke warm breakfast) and scrambled eggs that gave every appearance of having been made from real fresh eggs.Would definately stay again.

Very Pleasant Stay for 2 Nights
Have been here before and found the staff friendly and efficient. The rooms are nicely appointed and warm (really important during the snow here this week!). The beds are extremely comfortable! Would stay again.

City Hotel
We were looking for a good shower and a very comfortable night's sleep in Dunedin after a week of (not too rough) camping and that is what this hotel delivered. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The inner city is a short walk away so we had dinner and breakfast there. The hotel's provision of access to the Internet is poor.

ok, with a few issues
Average room with very soft matrasses. The bathroom was clean but looked a bit outdated (with a very small sink). Room was a bit noisy (no double glazing and room above what i think was the kitchen). On our first morning the breakfast was ok, but the second day we had the impression that the croissants and ciabatta breads were from the day before. We contacted the concierge about visiting the albatross and penguins on Otago peninsula and he told us there was no need to book ahead because it wouldn't be very busy. Luckily we did book through the i-site because by the time we got to the penguin place the tour was fully booked.

Comfortable Bed
We spend 3 nights at this hotel - Friday to Monday. The king bed was very comfortable and the room was clean and looked like it had been refurbished reasonably recently as decor and furnishings looked quite new. The electric heating was efficient and thermostatic controls were easily understood. Our room faced High St and with no double glazing we experienced some road noise on the Friday night however other nights were fine. The hotel is handy to many attractions and is only 3 blocks from the Octagon. The carpark was busy on the Friday and saturday night so we were put in the casino carpark - that was fine. Didn't eat at the restaurant as we were mainly busy with family events. Staff were friendly and provided good service.
