Modern Comfort
We enjoyed our two nights stay at James Cook, right at the busy business center of Wellington City! It is so near to all the shopping areas and the cable car station, so we have maximized our stay and we just walked around the city. The kids enjoyed the "very hotel" atmosphere plus the staff are exceptional. The window opens to the heart of the city, busy streets and tall buildings ( we needed that coz we live in a smaller town with lots of nature), so this was a great city breakaway for us. The serviced parking is awesome as i did not expect that kind of chauffer type of service! The food was not so fantastic but to be able to order anytime is really really good enough. I did not find any flaws on the building itself, the room was fully equipped with everything we needed, absolutely the best experience we have so far around wellywood in four years.

Good location
Good location on Lambton Quay shops at your doorstep. Terrance rooms are a decent size room we had faced the road/motorway. Comfortable beds only thing is I think they forget to put a lock on the wheels as every time we tried to sit on the bed it would move. Bathroom big enough. Internet is free I lobby 15 mins per day otherwise charged. Shops at doorstep via a lift. Courtney place, Cuba street and waterfront are all within walking distance. Cable car just down the road. Staff are friendly and helpful. Good place to stay I don't have anything that would stop me staying there again. I will be back !!

Excellent Stay
Stayed at this property as part of a conference May 2013. 2 day stay, three nights. Outstanding room apart from the low def TV - reception of signal seemed to be a problem. However - not there to watch Coro st. Comfortable, clean, good size room, with all usual high standard fittings, and accessories. Good location, nice people on staff. I was there for a conference - 120 people - great facilities - single level rooms/breakout sub rooms. Well equiped and laid out, great sound and help with managing that. Meals excellent, Nice breakfast - huge lunch and dinner buffets - all central or up one level - no need to travel and get lost in a warren of rooms. All in all a very nice experience, in a well established hotel, that has been maintained to a high standard.

Weekend visit
My grandson and I arrived early at the James Cook, but a light, airy, clean, spacious room was awaiting us. It is always a pleasure to arrive at the James Cook, to be greeted and welcomed by friendly, smiling staff. The 15-min bus ride from the airport dropped us off at the lift/elevator to the hotel, which was most convenient. The bed linen was of excellent quality, and the beds and pillows most comfortable. The breakfast buffet was plentiful, tasty and the choice extensive. The hotel is very convenient, just a few metres/yards to the cable car and its museum, and within easy walking distance to NZ Parliament Buildings and the Westpac Stadium, as well as the waterfront and Te Papa Museum. A most enjoyable stay, and I look forward to returning to this hotel.

Satisfactory, but avoid room service dinner.
Stayed three nights on a work trip. Location is great, which is why we seem to go back to the James Cook again and again. However, rooms and some facilities are getting tired. For example the hotel gym is hot, airless and pretty grotty and it really is time to get rid of shower curtains in the room. Seems very 1970s to have to contend with a shower curtain over the bath arrangement. I recommend avoiding room service dinner after a terrible experience. Took one hour 15 minutes to arrive (order was only one main meal) after saying that the meal would be there in 30 minutes when I ordered. I could have accepted this, perhaps by believing the the hotel was busy and if the meal was satisfactory when it finally got there. However the meal itself was so awful that the service needs to be commented on. I ordered panfried terakihi ($35 plus room service fee of $5) and it seemed that the terakihi had perhaps been panfried for the entire one hour 15 minutes that I waited for the meal to arrive - the fish was absolutely solid and my knife and fork were unable to cut into it! Truly awful. Positive part of stay was that Hayden, Concierge (?) was friendly, helpful and had a good memory for car/guest with valet parking.
