Comfortable and clean, good description
Hubby and I stayed two nights, didn't eat in the restaurant because of time constraints and what we thought were outrageous prices (until we completed our travels in NZ and Aus and discovered that everything and everywhere was pricey). There are no vending machines. I didn't notice any construction efforts nor did I hear any noise, but we were not actually inside the hotel much, and saw it mostly in the dark. Our room was fine, clean, as good as most $100 rooms in the US.

Its comfortable and clean
The hotel is in the middle of earth quake repair, but there is no construction noise to disturb you. The motel has a nice restaurant that does a buffet breakfast & diner. The food was basic but very nice. As other reviewers have noted, the furnishings are very 1970, but its well maintained.it is located quite close to Riccarton Mall and other shops.and restaurants are only a 5 - 10 minute walk up the road.It is opposite Haggley park, which is a great place to have a walk. The interent connection is pretty good and is free.

Great bar/restaurant, hotel ok
Our room/furnishings were quite dated and had a bit of an door. We opened the sliding glass door and aired it out, then it was fine. The bathroom was dated as well but immaculate. The hotel seemed to be going through some renovations - not sure if it was to update the hotel or do earthquake damage repair. In either case, an update was much needed. There was a major earthquake a couple of years ago and we were told that only a handful of hotels remained open. Perhaps renovations were slower to happen than they would have liked since repairs were taking place throughout parts of the city???Checked out the gym which was very difficult to find. The gym was poorly equipped and not very appealing - I really couldn't see myself working out there. Since we were only there one night We didn't take the time to check out the grounds. From the long windowed corridor we could see some of the gardens and it looked very nice from what we could see.We went to the bar for cocktails before dinner in the hotel. The bartender was very friendly and helped us navigate our long drive the following day and gave us some helpful recommendations. Another bartender came onto the shift and was very friendly and helpful as well. We enjoyed the friendly service and warm atmosphere of the bar so much we ended up eating dinner there. The bar had several booths and tables set up for dining. Our meals were very good as was the service that was provided by the bartender. Before we went down to the bar, we were a bit disappointed with our room, but the overall experience was made better with the service and atmosphere of the bar. hopefully renovations will bring the property up to standard of our bar/dining experience.

Good hotel within walking distance of city centre
My husband and I stayed here for one night on a 4 week trip round New Zealand. So much of Christchurch is still being rebuilt after the earthquake you have to make allowances. This hotel had suffered so only had one wing open. However it was perfectly clean and well appointed although I'm not sure what we gained by staying in a premier room. We ate in the bar which had a nice atmosphere and food was good. Staff very helpful and you can walk through the park and botanical gardens into the city centre. Free wireless was a bonus. Hotel has a shuttle bus at 7.45am to take you to the station to catch the Trans Alpine express

Not as advertised
We paid extra for the premier room ($40) and were disappointef. The decor was dated cream, brown and green - no 'fresh crisp colours" as advertised. There was only one bed - advertised 2, a king and queen. No luxurious Sheridan Linen (as advertised) - Britannia Textiles, well used linen. There was only one robe and slippers (advertised robes & slippers)for a couple The 'temperature control' was a very basic dial with no temperature apart from cold to hot. It was fan controlled which is noisy and uncomfortable. There was no mini-bar as advertised. The fridge 'hummed'.It did not open onto a courtyard or balcony (as advertised). We queried if the room was actually premier, and were told yes - if that is the case their advertising is definitely misleading.I left a detailed feedback form, and asked for a response from the manager. The reply was a brush-off and did not address the fact that the room was not as advertised, which is my gripe. The staff were fantastic, friendly and helpful. A pity the room did not live up to 'premier' advertisement - otherwise I would recommend this hotel, due to location and staff. I will not go back due to the poor response from management.
