Just Lovely
We only stayed one night (sadly). Beautiful hotel and exceptional staff. Full of old world charm and great location.Walk down Bourke Street and have breakfast at Florentinos. (Not that the hotel was bad - just know that Florentinos is good!)

Lovely historic hotel, great staff, restaurant lets it down
Historic hotel with wonderful check in staff. Stayed in basic room with no view due to WOTIF mystery deal, so it suited our purpose, a place to sleep. comfortable beds and clean room. Lovely history , wide corridors, great old staircase. Cricketers bar had great bar staff & was busy on sat night, but good place for drink. Lovely piano player in lobby who took requests.The only let down was dinner in the restaurant. Had to wait till 1930 due to no reservations but when we got there 5 mins early they let us in & we noticed half restaurant not being used. Had to wait hour for mains and then order was wrong. Food was fine, but expensive. Thought if wait was long, we should have been attended too a bit more. ordered dessert & once again a 30 min wait .Then on check out they had given our bill to another room. Would stay again but would walk out door for something to eat.

Old World Charm
We have just returned from the Windsor & I was quite surprised when I read previous reviews, I guess you can only go on how you personally find a property.We loved it, personaly I thought it had a old world charm, we stayed in a superior room, lot's of space & character & the bed was exceedingly comfortable.Bathroom had the shower over the bath tub,however we did not find that a problem, however some people could.Furnishing,towels etc very high standard. Breakfast was included in our package & we thoroughly enjoyed all the choices,loved it !! Service fabulous!Finally... really enjoyed the twinkling sounds of the piano in the foyer, would love to return next time we are in Melbourne. Missy Australia.

Poor Tired Old Windsor
Once a grand hotel, the oldest in Australia this poor old lady is in need of a desperate refirb. 16 years ago I stayed here for my Wedding Night in the Victorian Suite which was just amazing, but sadly nothing has been done to update the hotel in that time. Apparently the whole hotel is being restored in 2014 so I urge you to wait until then for an overnight stay. In the mean time please go into the foyer and marvel at the amazing staircase built in the 1800's, look at the first ever lifts in a hotel in the world (they are no longer working) have "high tea" in the amazing ballroom but if you want to stay overnight, go across the road to the Park Hyatt.

Victorian decor, timeless comfort
The reason why Tripadvisor sites are so useful is that you should know what to expect of a hotel, at least to some extent. I have been staying at the Windsor for over 10 years, and have had a wide variety of rooms from luxurious suites to small rooms with no view, depending on how heavily they are booked. This is not the place for people who like shiny modern hotels, but should be on the list for people who enjoy something a bit different and are willing to roll with a few minor inconveniences because they are staying in a heritage building. I continue to stay because I love the ambience but most of all because the rooms are soothingly comfortable, the beds are great and there are some lovely extra touches like the hot chocolate sachets, good magazines and the Financial Review delivered to my door every morning without any reminder. Also there is nothing better than going to a function in the Grand Ballroom and then simply floating upstairs to your welcoming room.
