Still a good location
Staying at the hotel gives you a different New York experience, one more relevant to what New York residents experience. Restaurants outside, a lovely diner two blocks down (towards Beacon Theatre), Central Park three blocks in one direction and Hudson River three blocks in the other direction. Rooms been upgraded and whilst it hurt to find out that a friend paid half the price I paid simply by booking on a discount web site and I still have not succeed in getting a room upgrade through their promotion of advertising for them on Facebook, it was still enjoyable.

Shoot the Decorator
On The Ave was a beloved, repeat-stay hotel for tourists as well as residents in the tri-state area. We recently had business in the city and were looking forward to another stay here. The hotel is under new ownership and the recent redecoration of the guest rooms is shocking. The once charming, rather pretty-romantic decor is all gone. It now looks like a kid's room with furniture from an IKEA Outlet store. Bare wood floors, no rugs. The night tables and credenza have no back side and the front panels are reminiscent of a gym locker. A dark, heavy drapery is suspended behind the beds....very odd. The renovation screams cheapness and hideous taste. It is neither hipster, urban, chic, cool or stylized like other boutique hotels. The rooms are also smaller than before, and the hotel is dishonest about the square footage. I also think it is very shabby to charge $15 per day for WiFi in the rooms while the lobby, which has free WiFi, is closed down for renovations. I doubt On The Ave will hang on to repeat customers but perhaps that is no longer their business model.

Gem of a Hotel
My nine year old daughter and I stayed at On the Ave in April during her spring break and had a lovely time at the hotel and in the city. Although the hotel lobby was being renovated and under construction (lots of noise, cramped public space), our guest room, although small, was modern, fresh and clean. My kudos however, goes to the staff, which uniformly was efficient, helpful, and responsive. Their professionalism and service oriented demeanor really made us feel welcome. The residential neighborhood is full of interesting shops and restaurants, plus the subway is only a couple of blocks away, making access easy to anywhere in the city. When it was time to leave, the hotel suggested a private car service that was right on time, and only cost $5 dollars more than a yellow taxi. We are already looking forward to our next trip!

Great location, very clean
My son and I stayed at the hotel while visiting Columbia University. The room was very clean, comfortable beds, huge tv, plenty of closet space and the bathroom was big. We found plenty of places to eat, shop and the subway station was 2 blocks away and easy to find. My son has committed to Columbia so we will be going there in August and October and plan to stay at One the Avenue both times. The restaurant downstairs is very good!! The only advice I would give is bring earplugs, it's New York!

Great customer service, good location
Like other reviewers, I was a bit bummed about the construction. The lobby and elevator areas were tight, but it never took us more than 5 minutes to catch an elevator, Staff at On the Ave were awesome, even after we left. I accidentally left a sentimental item in the room. When I called staff quickly located the item and shipped it to me. I was so grateful. Thanks to Martha from housekeeping and Dennis for your excellent service!
