Great location & Helpful Staff
My husband and I stayed at the Alex (Wyndham) Hotel for a long weekend and I have to say, we had a great stay! We were on the 9th floor, not a great deal of noice just a few police cars occasionally but you are in a city. The bed was comfortable, the room cleaned to a high standard daily by the maids and the desk staff couldn't have been more helpful. The location is definitely a winner and its nice and easy on the subway from JFK. There is a great little diner accross the street that does awesome breakfasts, proper American diner and the service is really good. The pub next door is nice but quite expensive

Great location, but not so friendly staff.
Love the location, its close to some great must see/do sights if your a NYC virgen. The staff at check-in was not so friendly, the guy took his sweet time to check us in, no smile, not welcoming, I was not impressed with his attitude. We booked the 2/2 suite, which is big for a NYC hotel, clean and nicely decorated in modern NY fashion but not too swanky. The bed was comfy, which is a huge plus. The downside is the shower, prepare for little to no water pressure, no bueno people. The suite has a full kitchen with living/dinning area combined, we didn't do any cooking but the massive fridge came in handy. There's a whole foods not too far from the hotel. Taxi's are always near the hotel so it's not too hard grab one even during rush hour.

Modern Hotel With Some Annoyances
The staff was friendly, the hotel had nice modern flair and the room was spacious for NYC. The hotel was 4 blocks from Grand Central so somewhat close to the subway. The WiFi didn't work the entire time of our stay. The elevators are a huge pain in the rump - a computer system runs the cars so if you're staying on the the 4th floor but someone in the car is on the 6th floor, you have 6th floor before getting to your floor if you don't hit the 4th floor on the lobby computer screen. Too many great hotels in the area, I am not sure we will be staying here again.

Great hotel
The rooms were modern and tastefully decorated. TV in the bathroom.Good location- close to Grand Central.Staff were very pleasant. I would stay here again and recommend it to anyone coming to New York.

Alex in Flux
The Alex is now the Wyndham Midtown. The mixed reviews on this hotel make sense to me now. We celebrated my wife's 60th birthday in a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, suite with a kitchen. I was a fabulous time. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful with bringing what we needed to scrape by in the under-supplied kitchen. These are not quite the "gourmet" kitchens that Preferred Hotels advertised for the Alex, but the staff helped us to successfully have a surprise dinner with friends from 30 years ago. I hope the Wyndham shift is an upgrade, because this hotel would rate a 5 out of 5 with just a little upgrading.
