Historic, good location, but a lil stuffy for my taste
A beautiful grand hotel but stuffy. Remonds me of some stays while in London. VERY comfortable bed but thin walls. (Noisy neighbors coming in at 1:30 am didnt help) Bathrooms were only so so. Small. Old. Poor draining shower (yuk) Large hotel. Desk staff were fine. Bellman were terrific and really aimed to please. Concerge was a joke and borderline condesending. Gym is VERY small. Pool looked like fun if you had children.

Splendid but needs improvements
Luxury decor and very professional team. Location perfect for shopping and restaurants. Our room was very beautiful like every corner of this hotel. However, we could hear noisy water running through the pipes when our neighbor above or below or next to us took a shower at 1 in the morning. Not pleasant and not acceptable in a 5 star hotel! The fitness center with pool was very nice and the woman running it was very warm and pleasant to chat with. Great service! The breakfast had good and bad things about it. Large variety of food but the croissants and pastries were not good quality, probably frozen. This is not 5 star pastry! The waiters were not always attentive either. Finally, we had a wonderful diner in the hotel restaurant one evening and were served by an excellent and very charming waiter.

Beautiful architecture, great location, but I would sleep somewhere else
The hotel's restaurant architecture is magnificent, and worth a visit for the ambiance alone. The hotel is located just a few blocks away from Union square, right in the heart of the city. However, the rooms are not as comfortable as one would expect from this beautiful hotel. The pillows are terribly bulky and hard, and are all alike. They only have one plug at the desk which I feel is insufficient for today's traveler's needs. The fitness center is small and usually was very crowded in the early mornings when I tried to use the equipment.My biggest complaint, however, is that when I checked in late at night I was assigned and given keys to a room that already had guests in it. I was embarrassed to wake them up as I tried to open the door, and had to take a long walk back to the lobby to get this corrected (the hotel has very long hallways). The front desk clerk was hardly apologetic.I am unlikely to stay here again.

A Gem in Union Square
I love this hotel. The employees are super friendly and the location cannot be beat. The hotel is beautiful...like old Hollywood and very lovely indeed. The deluxe room was still a little small with one sink in a small bathroom but it still was ok for two people...They brought me new pillows since the ones on the bed were a little dense and we were really happy after that first night. They also brought me a Keurig coffee machine with coffee pods for our stay with no extra charge. The bathroom amenities were really first quality and big sizes. The hotel was very accomodating and we will stay there again.

Visit Hotel, Skip The Stay
Yes, this edifice is excellent, as are the common areas on the main floor. Do NOT miss the atrium restaurant for architecture, and the food is good (albeit overpriced). Staff was average-nothing outstanding. Rooms were average-nothing outstanding, except for the very comfortable bed. As a matter of fact, my room had three of four handles missing off the bathroom window shutters, the tops of all wood furniture (desk, small table, dresser) were VERY worn, the carpet was dirty as in not having been cleaned for some time, bathroom shower/tub had dark mold in grout in various places, and so on. These are not huge things, but for the price and for the fact this is a luxury collection property of Starwood it should be more magnificent--not even a darn robe in the room. Yes, it's historic so by all means take a visit and bask in the best parts of the hotel--the public areas. With it's easy access off the Muni/Bart/Street Cars at the Market/Montgomery station it's an easy stop off for a quick visit. For the price, you are MUCH better off elsewhere.
