5 Star? Not in this lifetime
I am sitting in my hotel room as I disappointedly write this review. The NH Barbizon Palace IS ideally located. What it ISN"T is a 5 star hotel. Or a 4 star hotel. It might be a 3 star on a good day. The rooms are antiquated, the TV was made around 1902, the safe isn't big enough to hold a laptop, or an iPad, and the free Internet isn't as fast as dial-up. I'm talking slow. I'm talking 5 minutes to load a FaceBook page. I'm not even sure it will let upload this review. My bed looks like it came out of the local college dorm, or maybe a prison cell. I am very unhappy with this dump, but since I was stupid enough to take their prepaid deal, I'm stuck here for 3 days. In all fairness, I might like this hotel if they didn't advertise themselves as a 5 star hotel, and write obviously fake reviews here. I've been in Europe for 3 weeks and this by far the worst hotel I have stayed in. I expected more - much more.

Great location, great service
Loved my stay here. Super attentive staff, excellent location, comfortable and large room. Only minor complaint - had a room opposite the Irish Pub behind the bar, and the singer/songwriter there wasn't very good. Only problem on warm nights, else they keep the door closed.

location location location
The location of this hotel could not be better..steps from the Central train station..a couple of blocks away from the Palace and the Dam. The hotel room was spacious, clean and tastefully decorated. We were there for 12 nights..originally reserved an apartment but these are located in a seperate building away from the hotel. Ours was on the 4th floor with NO elevator. The apartments are huge, clean and great value but NO elevator and in a seperate building. We asked for another room and without fuss had a new room on the 1st floor on the corner facing the side street. The room was large, clean and very comfortable. The staff could not have been friendlier or more accomodating. The food in all of the restaurants was excellent. Could not have enjoyed our stay in Amsterdam any more.

Great location
Rooms are basic but clean. Brunch is sumptuous...everything from scrambled eggs to waffles and variety of fruits in lovely restaurant. Right across from central station which has ATM machines. Trams leave from CS and number2or 5 take you to art museums. Concierge very nice for getting tickets etc. hotel staff very attentive.brought extra pillows pronto.

Both hit and miss
Absolutely the best location for 1) strolling over from Centraal station (connects with the airport), 2) not requiring any mode of public transportation for sight seeing, 3) close access to bars and restaurants with no struggle to get back "home". Stayed for 4 days, booked in advance but given the last room (smoking and double rather than the twin and non smoking requested) which was so underlit (one of the original huge beamed rooms) we were happy to be moved the next day to a much smaller room in the front . Had read the reviews of breakfast so shelled out the ¿¿¿19, but wasn't impressed.A very dated interior, but staff courteous and accommodating. Had a good deal so worked out economical, wouldnt be as happy if I had paid the full fare. Location, although not hugely scenic due to construction work opposite, was definitely the main plus. However, Amsterdam being quite compact, I would look at staying in Jordaan area next time to enjoy the canals views while still being relatively close to the station and entertainment areas.
